The Seattle Department of Transportation has printed 10,000 beverage coasters that encourage folks to travel by foot and bicycle. SDoT will begin distributing them to bars in the Pike/Pine neighborhood today. Here’s one of them:

I’m glad the city is actively promoting walking and non-vehicular transportation, especially in bars. But they desperately need some new—less condescending—messages. In fact, they’re so desperate, they’ve even printed a coaster offering to pay you to come up with something better:

The coasters, funded by a federal grant to reduce driving in neighborhoods near downtown, cost $3,400. “At the time, we are just doing this in Pike/Pine, given the needs of that neighborhood and because we are also focusing on the neighborhood for parking improvement,” says SDoT spokesman Rick Sheridan.
