RE: "Where Can I Get a PI Box?"

Posted by on Mon, Apr 13, 2009 at 2:40 PM

Last Friday, I posted instructions for acquiring a red PI box.

I updated my post after the Seattle Times—which handled distribution for the print P-I—changed their minds and decided not to sell the boxes last week, but it seems some folks have still been trying to get ahold of PI boxes.

To recap: due to some craziness and internal miscommunication over at the Seattle Times, PI boxes are no longer for sale. They may be available in the future, and if/when that happens, I'll let you know.

Here's the response I received from Dog Musselman-Brown this morning in regards to my letter of interest in buying a PI box:

--

There's been a bit of a hitch in this. We told the Stranger last weekthat boxes were available for sale to the public. At the time it was correct. Since then, some members of the Seattle Times management team
have become concerned about issues surrounding the sale of the boxes to the public. As a result, we won't be selling any boxes. However, if this changes, I will contact you via email to let you know.

My apologies for any problems this causes.

Thanks.

Oh, you know another cool art project you could do?

Buy up every single old PI box and install them on the sidewalks all over the city. Every day, load each box with a paper filled fresh articles containing fact-checked, professionally-edited stories describing the local, national, and international events of the day. The artist would hire several hundred assistants to go out and collect the information for all these daily stories. Let the public interact with the piece by placing coins in the boxes to open them, and allow them to take one (and only one -- honor system!) paper. Just keep doing it every day and let the public and other artists and critics, you know, talk about what it means and whatnot.

So, if they're not for sale, where can we get them?

Can we just take a Times box and paint it red?

still loved when the tablet took a shitted on messy beat up stranger box out of an alley, cleaned it up and used it for 2 weeks. Then the Stranger nazi dept got lawyers and emo and wrote sad songs and passively talked about it until they had to give it back.

OR you could head down to Fairview and Thomas (Times loading docks) and just hope the security camera isn't pointing in your direction and take one.

They're just sitting in an organized formation out in the elements.

I love whenever anyone brings up Tablet, 3+ years after it's demise. It's so cute.
