The rescue of Capt. Phillips, and the fact that Obama authorized the operation, has the right in a state of confusion—some only praise the Navy SEALs; some reluctantly praise Obama; some simply spew pure nonsense. Just read the comments for this post on Fox News and see the chaos. The positive result of the rescue operation will only deepen the split on the right.

I was going to vote for Palin in 2012 (I already have my ballot filled out, I sleep with it under my pillow) But now I am torn because sinking a life raft full of pirates does seem more manly than shooting elk from a helicopter.

It is a happy story. If the geopolitically obtuse can cheer when a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 gets bombed and invaded in the name of avenging 9/11, then dovish types such as myself can cheer when three individuals, caught in the act of piracy they personally undertook, and threatening to murder a merchant marine sea captain, get shot to pieces. The fact that the event has caused the right wing to have to twist themselves into pretzels to figure out a way to say this reflects badly on Obama (see @8 for a particularly comic example), that's merely gravy.

It may only be "a dinghy with four pirates in it," but assymetrical warfare is never going to get you "slay the dragon" type glory. The problem here was that any miscalculation would have resulted in the captain, an innocent man with family, being murdered, with the U.S. response bearing most of the blame.
The military (including the CiC, who was apparently closely involved in the situation) played this exactly right, and scored an impressive victory. They not only got the victim home safely, but sent a rather clear warning to the pirates.

Obama deserves some credit here, but not the bulk of it. It seems sort of misplaced to crow about Obama scoring some great victory. Yes, he did the right thing in authorizing force, or what sounds like basically telling the military to do whatever they though was best. But that's all he did. He should be commended for that, but the real heroes are the military and Capt Phillips.

@15: you're completely correct. The thing that tickles me is the gang at e.g. Malkin grumbling about the whole event is one more example of how _bad_ Obama is. It's not an easy case to make, and you know that they're dying to exchange high-fives all around instead of grousing, but they're nothing if not disciplined in their craziness, and they are most of the way to piecing together a unified response. Mostly, it's along the lines of what @8 said above, plus a little of "a REAL commander in chief would have rescued the captain much sooner, or at least killed the pirates sooner." It's fun to watch. Eventually, they will relieve the ache that is their cognitive dissonance, but it will come at the price of looking that much stupider to mainstream America.

The news off the coast of Somalia was indeed, good news. Pres. Obama is our Commander-in-Chief and members of armed forces serving him and us (the USA) freed a hostage and neutralized pirates that abducted him. I believe there is no need to politicize it.
I do not agree there is any major rift in the GOP. There is no evidence in the major news media. Some Fox viewers don't necessarily provide evidence of such a split. Many Fox viewers are indeed reactionary but that doesn't represent rational Repubulicans and other voters.
I didn't vote for Obama. But he is doing a pretty good job so far. His armed forces did the job expected of them and performed well.

OBAMA VS. PIRATES.... At some point over the last few days, the hostage standoff with Somali pirates became a leadership test for President Obama. I'm not sure how or why, and I'm less sure this makes sense, but it apparently happened anyway.
Oddly enough, it seems conservatives wanted it this way. Some on the right blamed the White House for the pirates attacking the Maersk Alabama in the first place, while many more blamed the White House for not resolving the matter immediately. The situation, conservatives told us, made the president, and the country, appear "weak." As Michael Tomasky noted this morning, the "unhinged-o-sphere" had started calling this "Obama's Hostage Crisis."
Given this, if Obama is held responsible when bad things happen, I suppose he necessarily deserves at least some credit when good things happen.
