There's a lot going on today.
Third Place Books hosts Sophie and John Javna, who will read from The New 50 Simple Things Kids Can Do to Save the Earth. I miss Captain Planet. Wasn't he going to fix everything? Later in the day, Third Place will host Sharol Louise. Louise, who is the author of Secret Sister, will read from her newest book, Secret Bride. Both books are historical romances.
There will be a panel discussion at the Seattle Public Library titled "Huck Finn: In or Out of School," which is supposed to determine whether kids should be taught Huckleberry Finn in school. The person arguing against Huck Finn is probably going to go to hell.
And since we're discussing deadly serious topics, why not head down to Elliott Bay Book Company for the reading by Mahmood Mamdandi? The book is titled Saviors and Survivors: Darfur, Politics, and the War on Terror. That's a little heavy for a Saturday afternoon, but, you know, it's important.
Lastly, there's Norwescon, going on in Seatac all weekend long. I went last year and wrote extensively about it on Slog and in the paper, so I didn't go this year. Plus, the guest of honor is R.A. Salvatore, which is disappointing on many levels. But it's still fun and you should go if you're at all into sci-fi.
The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.
