"Where Can I Get a PI Box?"

Posted by on Fri, Apr 10, 2009 at 10:37 AM

UPDATE: There appears to be some sort of disconnect over at the Seattle Times. Yesterday, staff at the Times confirmed they were selling boxes, but according to an email I just received from ST spokeswoman Jill Mackie:

We are not selling boxes on a broad basis to the public at this time. It may be that we will decide to do so once final determinations have been made. We will be sure to notify the public if we do decide to sell individual boxes to the public. Thanks for your help.

If you're one of those sentimental types that's still looking to get their hands on a PI box, there is hope. But it's gonna cost you.

The Seattle Times—which handled distribution of the print PI—is selling off about 3500 of the PI's big red distribution boxes at $40 a pop.

If you want a PI box, email Doug Musselman-Brown at dmbrown@seattletimes.com.

Slogtipper George has grand plans for his PI box: "I'll "be putting an LCD in the front window and displaying the home page of Seattle-PI.com. It’ll sit in the lobby of my condo as art. New media encapsulated in the shell of old media."

I hear the managing editor of The Weekly stole one and has it sitting in his office. Probably still has money in the coin box. I wonder if that's a felony or just a misdemeanor.

@4, what makes that funnier is that Times does a lot of distribution for the Weekly, and lots of red PI boxes were replaced with red Weekly boxes.

And probably doesn't have much coinage in it, whoever tended the route putting the Times in the other boxes should have removed change days or weeks before the boxes were picked up from streets.

The boxes that they are selling definitely have the coin boxes removed.

Those things don't go with anything do they? Perhaps 20 year old roomies with a spool for a coffee table, but that's about it.

I think that they should use those as public art like they did with the pigs. Give a whole bunch of them to local artists and have the artists paint, decoupage, sculpt, etc. them and then install them all around town for a while and then auction them off for a charity.

I just got back from buying one. Doug, the nice guy that's handling the sales, said he's been inundated with requests about buying these since this slog posting went up--and the posting also caused a little kurfuffle with the Times management about whether or not to sell them. Regardless of that, he sold me a cool old one that was painted/screened with the globe unlike the newer ones ones which are decals.

People are lined up to buy these useless objects and now -- because of the high demand -- they have decided to hold off on selling them? Unbelievable. And yet totally believable.

@5, my understanding is, he stole the box a long time ago, when newspapers were popular. I'll bet there's quite a few quarters in it.

I had to try really hard to figure out how to buy one, I spent several days negotiating phone trees and email at what is left of the PI and the distribution arm of the Times. When I got there, I asked Doug if he cared if I publicized how to get one and he said 'no' so I followed up with Jonah.
