The Morning News

Posted by on Fri, Apr 10, 2009 at 7:17 AM

"The Single Deadliest Attack Against U.S. Forces in More Than a Year": Iraqi suicide bomber kills 5 U.S. soldiers.

The Mercenary Mess: CIA bars private contractors from interrogating terror suspects.

Six-Tuba Salute: Fellow tuba players to honor Tuba Man during M's season opener.

Mother Nature Lashes Out: Deadly tornado in Arkansas, deadly wildfires in Oklahoma and north Texas.

Arm Thyself: Mason County commissioner's advice to citizens worrying over cuts to law enforcement.

Stone Thyself: Spanish scientists find active component of marijuana has "anti-cancer effects."

You Know That Earthquake That Destroyed So Much Of Italy?: As KING 5 comfortingly reminds us, "the Pacific Northwest could suffer the same fate at any moment."

And finally, 24 years ago today, Madonna kicked off her first North American tour at Seattle's Paramount Theater. As the video below shows, this was the era of roving hordes of Madonna wannabes and an appealing layer of pudge on our no-longer-starving artist. (As the video doesn't show, this was also the tour with the brilliant and controversial opening act.)

KING 5 is such a ray of sunshine they don't even need to get their weather forecasts even remotely right.

Dumbfucks. The Italian quake was nothing like, and orders of magnitude smaller than, a subduction fault earthquake. See here for more information.

Holy Christ, the Beasties opened up for the likes of mid-80s Madonna? That would be like the Blue Scholars opening up for Hanna Montana or the Jonas Brothers...

Oh, wait, it was the shitty frat boy first album Beastie Boys. That makes more sense, sort of.

@3, tell these people you weren't impressed by their lame quake:

@6 Obama had a plan for leaving Iraq, did you pay attention? You're a fucking idiot.

At 6.

I, too, wish Obama would wave his magic wand and make all of the Bush administrations fuck ups disappear.

Madonna could sorely use some of that layer of pudge today, wow.

The original mission of Operation Iraqi Liberation isn't fulfilled.

Did you see the new SUV Chrystler unveiled? The 20MPG luxury Jeep? There's a correlation with our continued military presence in the Area Of Responsibility.

I got a laugh out of the headline on CNN.com this morning: "Wildfires Scorch Southwest." Now, I don't know about you guys, but I don't tend to think of Texas and Oklahoma as the "southwest." I'm not exactly sure how I think of Texas and Oklahoma. (To tell the truth, I try not to.)

Arm thyself, stone thyself, but don't carry concealed while using marijuana or you'll break federal and state laws.

There's no specific law against being high, but you can't legally get a concealed carry permit in WA if you're a drug user.

@5: "Dumbfucks" refers to the folks at KING5 who obviously know nothing about earthquakes and know no one who does. Also, they can't Wiki anything either apparently. Both my father and his sister married into Italian famlies (Sicilian and Calabrian, respectively) and I have nothing but love for the Italians.

@3: Again, where does that scenario come from? Because, while terrifying, a subduction earthquake is much less likely than a shift on the Seattle fault.

Oops, I was wrong. The Seattle fault movement scenario has a 5% chance in 50 years, vs. 15% for a random shallow M6.5 or greater earthquake, and 10-14% for a Cascadia subduction zone earthquake.

@14, major earthquakes happen along the Cascadian Subduction zone every 300-400 years, and can be over 9.0 M. Please keep in mind that the last such earthquake was in 1700, meaning that we're very likely due for one within the next hundred years.

While we sit right on the Seattle fault (estimated at a 7.0 capability, as opposed to over 9.0--remember we're talking orders of magnitude here) AND there are multiple other fault lines along the Puget Sound, none of them can produce nearly the magnitude of damage caused by a subduction quake which stretches all the way down the Pacific coast from BC to California.

Also, the last earthquake on the Seattle Fault was what, a thousand years ago? Another will happen, I'm sure, but we don't know when--and we don't have the records for this fault like we do for the Cascadia Subduction zone.

God effing damn it, that was the only time Madonna's played Seattle. And 80s Madonna owns 2000s Madonna in every way.

@18, for real (although I'm still a big dorky fan, and think they should just give her all the orphaned African babies she wants). I'm so glad I watched this video after that horrible Glen Beck thing--it provided a much-needed attitude adjustment.

I remember coming home from school and being terrified of the BIG ONE THAT WAS GOING TO TAKE OUT THE ENTIRE NORTHWEST (yay educational terrorizing of young children). My Mother soothed my worries saying, "Honey, that quake that's going to happen any day now has been going to happen since I was your age. Don't worry about it, it may be a possibility, but they have no way to guage when it would be."
Aww, thanks Mom! Here's to 59 consecutive years of you living through impending quakepocalypse!

Wow, it's amazing how choreography has changed at these superstar shows, and to think of how much Madonna had to do with that.

When Mount Rainier goes, up to 250,000 people could be killed and at least that many severely burned as well.

Earthquakes are the least of your worries.

The poll on CNN currently:

Should the Pet Shop Boys follow PETA's suggestion and become the Rescue Shelter Boys?
_ Yes
_ No

WTF PETA? Why do you make yourself look so stupid all the time?!?!?!

One thing that Madonna and Britney have in common is that they both made sure that there were always plenty, plenty, plenty cute boys on stage at their concerts. Smart move.

But that's just about where the similarities end. True, they both have gotten very wealthy from their time in the pop culture spotlight, but Madonna is uber alles a businesswoman. Britney's fame has been engineered by others. Not a stitch of clothing was revealed, not a breath on stage was taken that didn't have Madonna's oversight.

Madonna also learned very, very early to use the press to her advantage - something Britney has done only serendipitously with no overall plan. Anybody can shave her head and go a little nuts. Madonna would have done it and built an album and tour around the experience and everyone would have gone to the concert looking like an inmate at the asylum.

Neither has any great artistic talent, but Madonna has earned her place in our hearts.

Madonna wins the prize for still looking good for her age while her fans who were adults in the early 80s don't look as good as her today.
