What She Said

Posted by on Wed, Apr 8, 2009 at 12:00 PM

Lurleen dismantles the false witness (and witnesses) in NOM's ad in this comments thread...

I'm a California doctor who must choose between my faith and my job...

This has nothing to do with marriage. Although she doesn't name the case she references, the California Supreme Court ruled last year that a scenario such as he describes would be in contempt of state non-discrimination law. These people are lamenting that they can no longer legally discriminate against gays in health care and related services.

I'm part of a NJ church group punished by the government because we can't support same-sex marriage...

The Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association is not a church, as the ad actor misstates, but is a religious ministry. It owns "seaside land that includes a boardwalk pavilion. It obtained an exemption from state property tax for the land on the grounds that it was open for public use and access. Events such as weddings of any religion could be held in the pavilion by reservation. But when a lesbian couple sought to book the pavilion for a commitment ceremony, the nonprofit balked, saying this went against its religious beliefs. The court ruled against the nonprofit, not because gay rights trump religious rights but because public land has to be open to everyone or it's not public."

I'm a Massachusetts parent helplessly watching public schools teach my son that gay marriage is OK...

A federal judge verbally spanked David Parker for wasting precious court time and resources with this baseless lawsuit. Parker appealed to the US Supreme Court, who refused to review the case. Here is just a taste of what the federal judge said:

In summary, the court must dismiss plaintiffs' federal claims because this case is not distinguishable in any material respect from Brown v. Hot, Sexy and Safer Productions, 68 F.3d 525 (1st Cir. 1995). In Brown, the First Circuit held that the constitutional right of parents to raise their children does not include the right to restrict what a public school may teach their children and that teachings which contradict a parent's religious beliefs do not violate their First Amendment right to exercise their religion. [page 3]...

In essence, under the Constitution public schools are entitled to teach anything that is reasonably related to the goals of preparing students to become engaged and productive citizens in our democracy. Diversity is a hallmark of our nation. It is increasingly evident that our diversity includes differences in sexual orientation. Our nation's history includes a fundamental commitment to promoting mutual respect among citizens in our diverse nation that is manifest in the First Amendment's prohibitions on establishing an official religion and restricting the free exercise of religious beliefs on which plaintiffs base some of their federal claims. [page 4]

I love that "Brown v. Hot, Sexy and Safer Productions" is a valid, precedent-setting case.

What utter nonsense: How can a lesbian commitment ceremony be against anyone's religious beliefs? It's a non-religious event with no legal aspect to it whatsoever.

Being nice to lesbians is against their religious beliefs.

What slog post was this a comment too? The link took me straight to the comments but didn't show me what the original post was.

They don't understand. They'll never understand. Their preachers told them to oppose gays and they obediently oppose gays, no questions asked.

They can't be bargained with. They can't be reasoned with. They don't know pity, or fear, or remorse. And they absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until gays are gone.

I'm a California gay, and my sister voted for Prop 8 to punish the lesbian couple involved in the doctor case (and which has since chilled our relationship). The case involved a doctor refusing to provide certain fertility treatments to this lesbian couple on religious/moral grounds, which is, arguably, a totally elective procedure and should not fall within the ambit of the "public accommodations" doctrine, even though he was able to refer them to a more accommodating doctor and they ultimately conceived a child.

However, the state licensing board makes no such distinction between fertility doctors and ER doctors, and as long as this doctor wants to practice in CA, he better play ball, because what is to stop all fertility doctors in CA from "finding religion" and leaving all LGBT and other "morally objectionable" (perhaps interracial or interreligious) couples from receiving medically appropriate treatment.

Dan, why do you advocate stealing our freedom?

If the "gay agenda" forces the government to recognize homosexual marriage, then I'll have no more rights than an African-American living in the South during the 1950s.

Why can't homosexuals and homosexual sympathizers see this logic?

So these "actors"... are they actually Christians or are they just run of the mill out-of-work commercial actors and willing to say anything in front of a camera for bucks?

Because if they're the *latter*, I suggest we get a hold of their names and make sure they get blacklisted from other productions. There's no way we should let these asshats potentially prosper someday in the relatively gay-friendly industry of entertainment.

@15, if that's true it is ironic. A fertility doctor is an abomination to God in the first place. The doctor is playing "God" by making a woman fertile against God's will.

@20

Ok, I'll play. Give me a biblical verse showing why "A fertility doctor is an abomination to God" because "The doctor is playing "God" by making a woman fertile against God's will." One verse.

In contrast, if you take "Be fruitful and multiply" as a commandment (Genesis 1:28), then the lesbian couple were simply trying to fulfill their biblical duty. And yes, artificial insemination counts, according to every theological commentator I've read. So does adoption.

@ 18, I hope you're joking. But if you're not, YOU'RE the asshat. Blacklisting someone for political actions is ALWAYS wrong. It's censorship of another kind, and no freedom-loving American would EVER condone it, no matter what horrible views the blacklisted supported.

If that doesn't convince you, then think of how that will play on all the right wing and christian programs.

Don't be stupid.

This doctor took an oath saying that she will respect the privacy of her patients. In that oath, she also swore to remain a member of society with special obligation to all of her fellow human beings. That oath being the modern day Hippocratic Oath

From http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/doctors/oat…

I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.

and

I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.

Clearly, this doctor's forgot that she serves everyone regardless of religious beliefs. If she doesn't want to adhere to that oath, then she should close shop and find another profession. A doctor's role in society is to take care of those who are ill and suffering any type of malady regard of their patient's income level, gender, age, race, nationality, creed, religous/political beliefs, and sexual orientation.

I do hope someone quotes this in an ad, if there was any reservations about the true intentions behind the imposition of gay marriage this leaves no doubt about it.

Low IQ test:

1 - How can gay marriage be imposed upon you - or anyone else? (a) shotgun; (b) fiat; (c) God's 11th commandment

2 - What are the true intentions of gay marriage advocates? (a) to force it upon you; (b) to force it upon your het pets; (c) to violate God slaw

Yeah - for some Higher Divinity's sake, don't do anything in a public school that might make a student develop critical thinking skills sufficient to post cogent comments on Slog and not embarrass him/her/it/self/selves.

@18:

As a member of the "industry of entertainment", I certainly couldn't condone such blacklisting. Heck, if every actor who ever performed in a commercial had to personally endorse the product in question, there wouldn't be many actors appearing in those commercials.

IF these are in fact actors, and IF they got paid for the work, then they're doing a JOB, and they're being paid to ACT, that is, to convince an audience the character they're portraying believes something the actor themselves might not personally believe. That's what actors do.

Now, I can think of a LOT of actors who wouldn't even have auditioned for these roles based on their personal beliefs - despite what the general public thinks about the members of my profession, they have scruples (or at least many of them do - some of them would go down on their own mothers on-camera if they were guaranteed a paycheck out of it, but that's not an attitude exclusive to just my industry), but I'm also sure that in certain parts of the country it wouldn't be terribly difficult to find actors who DO in fact believe the things being stated in this ad; it's regrettable, but people are people, and they believe what they believe.

Oh, and if these people AREN'T in fact bona fide actors, but are instead "merely concerned Christians" then they are all TOTALLY LYING THROUGH THEIR FUCKING TEETH and they should absolutely be called to account for their blatant, unabashed mendacity.

And yeah, "diversity" is such an UGLY word. How dare taxpayer funded public schools teach impressionable children that being a member of a different race, or a different nationality, or a different religion, or a different economic class, or a different educational background, or a different sexual orientation, is all somehow acceptable.

Don't they KNOW the only acceptable thing to be is a cookie-cutter carbon-copy of a Good, God-Fearing American Protestant Evangelical Christian? Anything else is an abomination in the sight of The Lord, and should be struck down as an unclean thing, lest it infect the righteous, and bring pestilence to the land.

I mean, I'll bet you wouldn't find too many home schoolers indoctrinating their children with that kind of humanistic blasphemy...

24 - first of all, one really has nothing to do with the other (marriage equality laws never mention anything about mandating public schools change the content of their classes - if you think they do, I'd have to see specific examples with actual links/quotes/cases #'s), right-wingers like you just want to believe this.

Secondly, I love how you object to the line that schools should teach kids about diversity. Yes, how awful, indeed.
