Police Assist Suicidal Man Found Drunk, Wearing Diaper

Posted by on Wed, Apr 8, 2009 at 3:35 PM

Seattle Police responded to a Queen Anne apartment building Sunday morning after receiving a call from a man who told police he was concerned his brother planned to kill himself.

According to a police report, the man told officers he'd gone to his brother's apartment and found him "wearing only a shirt and an adult diaper."

When officers arrived at the scene, they heard the diaper-wearing man crying inside his apartment.

[Ed. note: you can stop reading here if you'd like. It only gets sadder.]

One officer climbed a ladder to see into the man's unit, and found the man lying on the floor bleeding from his elbow, with his head under a table. The report says the man's apartment was "very messy with no food, only alcohol in it."

The Officer used a car key to open the window and contacted the man who, according to the report, was barely conscious. The man's diaper, the report says, was "so full it was hanging down to his knees."

Medics arrived on scene and officers apparently had to restrain him when he became "combative" before he was involuntarily committed at Harborview.

What a crappy way to go that would have been!

I think he needs some time away at a medical facility where someone can clean him up and pamper him for a while.

On first quick reading, the headline made me think that the police are now participating in assisted suicide.

I was joking about the Depends. Guess someone took it the wrong way ...

How come SLOG never covered the attack by Canada on the US this week (aka death by F-15)?

@6 As compelling a story as that was, it did not involve an adult diaper. Thus, no coverage in the SLOG.

Ah, that explains it Ackham.

Sadly, it was by Cessna and not by Piper Cub, which would have been more fun (think SNL in the old days).

This story is distasteful, even by the standards of The Stranger. It's not acceptable to write up a police report of some poor guy's suicidal depression. Just because it happened doesn't make it newsworthy.

The crying, depressed diaper man, weighed down with his own filth, became combative before being led away.

IS GEORGE BAKAN GOING TO BE OK????

He just needed to be changed.

Then he would have stopped crying.

Obviously, none of you have children...

Doesn't anyone think it's a little bit heartless to spread this story? the man was clearly at a severely low point in his life... most of us experience some kind of severely low point, where we feel crazy and suicidal... give the guy some privacy. he's obviously suffering enough. he doesn't need this story posted all over the internet.

If you were drunk with no food and a diaper full of shit you'd be crying as well.

I have to disagree. I am glad they are reporting this. Usually the media only reports things about mentally ill people when they are killing other people. At least this gives more of a picture of some of the actual ways in which people are devastated by mental illness. People should be made aware that these kind of things happen and that almost all mentally ill people are non-violent and instead suffer a great deal. Perhaps this sort of discussion in the public sphere would lead to more humane treatments and policies regarding the mentally ill.

So what maybe he couldnt find anyone to except him, and hes not mentally ill. He prob just got to the point he couldnt stand not finding anyone to help him out with this. If he goes into a mental hospital, they arnt gunna change his diaper, thell just dope him up to the point he will wanna clean himself up. I tryed being a "public" baby but it didnt go down well.
