Lindy West (Me) on Too Beautiful to Live

Posted by Lindy West on Tue, Apr 7, 2009 at 5:50 PM

I'll be on tonight, talking about The Different Kinds of People That There Are.

I believe this will be my first time on live radio (unless you count that time I called Loveline to talk to Joel McHale and "won" a "Durex Party Pack," which consisted of 45 condoms and a shot glass). Let the hyperventilating begin!

Interested parties can hear me talk at 8 pm on KIRO.

It's not a real party unless there are at least two shot glasses. At least one of which must have a product logo or a naked lady on it.

I'm curious as to why KIRO is not on the Slog enemies list. KIRO is wholly owned by Bonneville International / Deseret Management / The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I'm not advocating for KIRO to be on the enemies list, I'm just curious to hear from the Stranger folks as to their reasoning on why it should or should not be an enemy. I see that KUOW is on there, and I assume I must have missed something because they seem an odd choice for an enemy? I personally find TBTL to be a decent enough show to justify occasional time spent listening to it. But I've never signed up to comment on their blog because I don't want to support KIRO / Bonneville THAT much.

Please elaborate on just why I ought to run out and buy a TV. Something about how everyone watches and so I should? Or is it just that I shouldn't every say I don't have one because then it will seem like I'm trying to be sophisticated because of it? When we know there are enough other reasons aside from the lack of a TV? Right? Lindy? You're still reading right? OK. Because back when Camille Paglia said I had to watch TV for the same reason I was like, what? And she never answered me.

Lindy- good for you! That was a fucking great article.

e, would you take a TV if someone gave it to you? Like if they had a used one, and didn't want it any more, and wanted to pass it off as a birthday gift?

#3 - It's the same reason we shouldn't know you're a vegetarian. There are lots of good reasons to be one, but there are no good reasons to mention it to me.

Mr. Sven, I'm well aware of what the solid waste utilities charge to take an old TV off your hands. You'll not fool me with that old "free TV" canard. Leave it on a traffic circle near Dan Savage's house, like everyone else.

Doug, people ask me all the time if I'm a vegetarian. Usually it's printed right on the invitation: are you a vegetarian? And when I don't tell them and just show up and avoid the meat, the yell at me for not telling them. How can I win?

Lindy, I, too, want people to not be an asshole. As I'm sure you're aware.

I'm very sad I missed the amazing intersection of Lindy and Joel McHale, but I'm very excited to listen to you tonight.

Whatever you do, don't take a bottle of Makers Mark and drink the whole thing yourself, on air, thinking it'd be funny to talk about Drunk of the Week while actually drunk

e@8: holy crap! I just looked it up. It *is* really expensive to dispose of a TV. $35 for this size. But there's no way I'm throwing it away- I'll find a good home for it, one way or the other.

@3: Who said you have to buy a TV?

If you don't want one, good for you. Just stop trying to convince yourself and everyone else that your little rebellion is something to be proud of, or that it puts you on the moral and intellectual highground.

In my opinion, refusing to watch TV is just as silly as refusing to read books, or use computers, or go to movies.

Lindy, I listened to your TBTL spot while baking cupcakes. You are a delight and a credit to the human race. (Vanilla buttercake with raspberry filling and bittersweet ganache frosting, just in case you wanted to know. I'm saving one for you <3).

@16

What? The reason I should get a TV is what? I don't get it.

I don't know what you're accusing me of. My moral and intellectual status are firmly erected on their own ground, last I checked and I never said anything about them. Lindy West is the one who started this TV discussion; I hadn't mentioned until now.

@20: then why did you bring it up immediately in this post, other than to talk about how you don't have a TV?

@20
The issue isn't that you don't have a TV, it's your reason for not having a TV. So, what's your reason?

Lack of money or time are acceptable answers.

The claim that everything on TV is vapid isn't very convincing, given that a) it's not true, and b) you don't have a TV so don't know what you're talking about.

And the belief that TV is evil is just ignorant paranoid hippy talk.

So which is it?

Some of us don't own TVs cuz we lack self-control and will waste our lives in front of them if they're around.

And THAT is what the internet is for.

Have fun, Lindy! Loved the article.

Lindy, loved your segment on TBTL. You have a sexy voice.

@22: seandr, it's spelled "hippie". People who write it "hippy" should be listed as one of those "Kinds Of People That There Are". Sorry, it just bugs the shit out of me. THE REST OF YOUR COMMENT IS RIGHT ON!
@25: violet, you are SO right. In fact, I haven't turned my TV on since I got the internet six months ago. Since I missed the switch to digital, the thing is pretty useless now, except for movies and video games.

Gosh, seandr, I guess I don't have an acceptable answer for why I don't have a TV! Am I in trouble?

Abby, I asked the question here because there are 2,500 comments on the original article, and my question wouldn't have been answered over there.

Assuming anyone who says they don't have a TV is being arrogant and pretentious about it is the same as saying you're afraid of clowns or you like pirates, or that tedious bacon thing. Just like Lindy and that dude said on the radio. You've heard it so many times and you think it's cool to say, so you just repeat it, even if the person didn't say one single thing to suggest they think they're superior for not having one.

Some people choose to not have cars. Are they all smug hippies who go around acting superior and constantly reminding everyone they don't drive? Some of them, to be sure. And some are just saying they don't have a car.

Ah crap! I heart Lindy but Too beautiful To Live is like Coca-Cola's or General Motor's idea of what's "young and cleverly ironic". (I gave TCBTBTLY a 2 or 3 week trial last fall, and, well, no.) So I missed this. And completely unknown sources say Lindy has a "sexy voice". Damn it.
