Iowa: We Were Pretty Awesome in the 19th Century and We're Gonna Have an Awesome 21st!

Posted by on Fri, Apr 3, 2009 at 11:56 AM

Openly gay Iowa state senator Matt McCoy walks us through Iowa's record on civil rights—Iowa's courts issued tons of ahead-of-the-curve judicial decisions back in the 19th century (who knew?)—and what we can expect over the next few years...

"There's no way a flood of out-of-control money can be used to quickly scare Iownas into going backwards on civil rights.... And whether you're gay or straight, think about coming to Iowa to get married."

If I wasn't already married, I'd make Iowa my wedding destination. I hope more people, whatever their orientation, show their appreciation toward Iowa.

You know, despite the fact that there are all kinds of f'd up things about the presidential caucus process -- and that because of it Iowa is used to people from out of state dumping tons of money in their state, trying to change their mind -- Iowa, weirdly, is not prone to letting outsiders change their mind -- even the evangelicals tend to seem a little saner (previous votes for Pat Robertson notwithstanding) -- and I hope that the response to outside pressure on this one will cause them to close ranks even more.

But if anything, the ruling seems like something Iowa City and parts of Des Moines will be thrilled about and that the rest of the state really won't think about too much unless they've got some gays in their family.

(I say this is a former kid who grew up on just across the Mississippi so I may know something about it. But maybe not.)

55% of americans are against and 45% of americans are for gay marriage.

The gap used to be much larger than 10%, even as recently as 5 years ago.

@9 - nah, that's just what they tell pollsters. 2/3 are for gay marriage, but some live in places where admitting that is dangerous.

check out today's AP wire on Iowa

"And whether you're gay or straight, think about coming to Iowa to get married."

It was really only a matter of time before the more forward-thinking states figured out how to play gay marriage to their economic advantage. Doing the right thing + more money flowing into the state = win-win.

As an Iowan through and through (who, sadly, now lives in California), I am moved to tears by the sanity of the Iowa Supreme Court. Iowa's motto: Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain!

Despite what many predicted, Barack Obama won the state of Iowa during the caucuses. Why were people shocked? Because most Iowans are white. However, most Iowans are not racist. Same thing for gay marriage. Most Iowans are straight, but most are also "live and let live" folks. Even if they don't agree with gay marriage, they most certainly will not allow others to take it away from their neighbors. Pragmatic, open minded, and kind.

Look out America! Iowa is taken over. :)

Strong christian families and a strong christian patriot like Sarah Palin will prevent these efforts to convert our children to homosexuality.
