That story from Austin is how it works everywhere, including here. A handful of transients make regular, sometimes nightly, trips to Harborview in a private ambulance for a host of health issues that have to do with the consequences of living on the street, sometimes chronic substance abuse and a complete absence of preventative care. This is the most expensive of all possible ways to offer medical care to the poorest people, and you pay it every time you pay your insurance bill. Why did that ambulance ride cost you $800? Probably because a lot of the people who get transported in ambulances don't pay and you, the paying customer, have to pick up the slack.

The Reagan/Limbaugh idea that ignoring poor people will lead to cost savings is pure fantasy. It's just another way of pushing costs to someplace where you don't see them. Emergency care is more expensive than preventative care, just like prison is more expensive than education. Conservatives are so obsessed with denying the poor "handouts" that they end up paying double what they would've paid if they'd just supported reasonable social spending in the first place.

Who said we had to pay for the emergency care?
What part of 'ignoring' is hard to grasp?

It must be hard to buy the Queen a gift. What do you buy the little old lady who probably has everything and a few castles? I understand she appreciates her Christmas gifts of pot-holders from her family and one year she was given one of those Billy Big Bass fish things that she found highly entertaining. (in the way that old ladies tend to)

The Obamas, together, are four times the size of the queen of England. I love them for that.

By the way, remember that Dallas cop who stopped the football player on the way to his mother-in-law's death bed last week?

He resigned yesterday.

Boo hoo.

To be accurate, the Queen is a Michelle-Obama-toucher. She started it!

My cats would do anything for raw green pepper, or to lick the wet inner surface of melon rinds.

Thank you, @2, for that intelligent answer. You're right; we do this here in Seattle too -- and everywhere. Health care in this country is fucking insane.

All the cat (instinctively) wants is the green leafs for its digestive system. Cats need grass or leaves to live naturally.

@14,

My cat always has access to wheat grass and she's nommed on my other nontoxic house plants on more than one occasion, yet she still goes crazy whenever I bring a pineapple home. It's not just instinct.

Oh, and I'm sure all those thoughtful anarchists who were guzzling cans of Carling Special Brew (9%) and throwing bottles at the medics who were trying to attend to the guy who died in London are really broken up about his death. Way to spread your message, guys. Oh, and your 9-11 Truther signs looked fabulous. When's the revolution coming, then?

I hope that pineapple was organic, for the cats sake. For the record, tho, not all cats use litter boxes.

The Obama's are quickly proving to be absolutely inept in questions of protocol. How embarrassing. If they don't know how to conduct themselves in these circles, they should just avoid them.

Even I knew better than to touch HM when I was admitted into her presence. (They brief you on these things before hand...)
