Although the Seattle Police Department supposedly broke up a big, dangerous pot dealing ring—which SPD claims was responsible for the recent crime wave in the University District—earlier this month, violent crime appears to be continuing unabated in the area.
On March 27th at about 9 pm, Seattle Police responded to a call about an assault on a motorist at NE 45th and University Way NE. According to a police report, a 25-year-old man stepped into traffic, crossed in front of a car—which had stopped for him—and threw a cup of hot coffee through the driver's open window, burning the man's arm.
What followed was a beautiful exchange between police and the jaywalker, which was documented by Officer Sarah Conley in her report:
"[The jaywalker] began his conversation with me by arguing the fact that he had hot cocoa in his cup, not coffee. When I informed him the flavor of his beverage was not the issue, he continued to argue and asked that I smell his drink. I declined. He did not deny that he was involved, he was just upset that we had assumed he was drinking coffee."After we got past the flavor issue," Officer Conley writes in her report, the jaywalker told officers that he had "tripped" and spilled his hot cocoa through the driver's window.
Police didn't buy the jaywalker's story, and he was arrested and booked into the King County Jail for assault and pedestrian interference.
