A Sweet Way to Celebrate April Fool's Day

Posted by on Tue, Mar 31, 2009 at 10:26 AM

Tomorrow morning, the first 100 people to visit any Cupcake Royale location (West Seattle, Madrona, or Ballard) will get a free baby cake of the new flavor of the month, Honey Peanut Brittle! (Read more about the new flavor in CR's blog.)

And, speaking of Cupcake Royale, they also just announced that they're adding the Salted Caramel Cupcake (which is a-maz-ing) to their daily selection. Hooray!

(Thanks for the delicious tip, CakeSpy!)

Cupcakes are vastly overrated, and everyone should boycott them for the first hour so me and my peeps can stuff em into our craws ... ok, just the Ballard location ...

That's great. It's too bad none of them are anywhere near the places I live or work.

Cupcake Royale cupcakes are too airy and light to have a point--the Krispy Kreme of cupcakes. Cake should be rich, moist, and *dense,* or it is not worth eating, and CR cupcakes don't pass that basic cake test.

Are you sure they aren't going to say "haha, April Fools" and ring you up?

WTF #3. Complaining that cupcakes and Krispy Kreme donuts don't have enough heavy cream and sugar? You need to study thisiswhyyourefat.com.

The Salted Caramel cupcake is fucking delicious, but it totally falls apart just from trying to remove the wrapper. #3 is right, CR's cake is too loose and dry.

All cupcakes are loose and dry. Eat some motherfucking pie. There, I wrote a pome. Cupcakes = shit.

I have to say, I visited Cupcake Royale and shared a salted caramel and a chocolate death (it was February). I wasn't blown away. I thought the icing:cake ratio was too low and I agree about the cake consistency. But then, I'm spoiled... (www.crumbs.com)

@8 There's nothing in Seattle that even comes close to Crumbs. Those cupcakes cause comas--so overwhelming and wonderful.

Oh princess, here's nothing wrong with Cupcake Royale.

mmm... Salted Caramel cupcakes.... mmm...

Unrelated cupcake story: One afternoon about a week ago, I wander into a kitchen store in Eugene, and the greeter/salesperson says "Excuse me, would you like to judge our cupcake baking competition?"

Um, yes, yes I would. It was as if I'd died and gone to cupcake heaven.

A city that has dozens of world-class cupcake shops and zero world-class bagel shops is in a sad, sad state.

Well, Fnarf, how often did you buy your bagels at a bagel shop in Seattle?

No market demand = No stores selling bagels.

You can still buy them at PCC and QFC and that place in Fremont next to Norm's.

Hey everybody! Thanks for all the sweet cupcake talk, and thanks Megan, for posting this. We've been working really hard at improving our cupcake recipes so they are moist and delicious, but true to our standards of natural, old-fashioned, scratch-baked cake. No shortening or preservatives, no dense cupcake rock in your stomach. Our cupcakes are intentionally light and fluffy, and we don't bury them under a massive mound of frosting. Our new vanilla cake recipe is, we think, pretty perfect, and the new chocolate is coming along. To those of you have noticed it crumbling - please know that we have too! And we are working hard to fix it. We're giving out these free cakes as a thank you to our customers, because we just won Best Cupcakes in Seattle Magazine's Best Restaurants 2009 issue. So thanks again, and hopefully we'll see you tomorrow in time for a freebie!

Agreed Will@1, I don't think cupcakes are all that-too small and airy to get excited about. Give me a Top Pot Donuts in West Seattle.

It would be kind of funny if people didn't actually get a cupcake. April fool’s day is one of my favorite, I always try to come up with something new. I try to switch who I target each year, it seems to keep everyone on their toes. Here are some of my favorite hoaxes that I draw inspiration from, you can vote on your favorite: http://www.toptentopten.com/topten/april…

Jody Hall, class act!

I don't have an opinion on Cupcake Royale, because I haven't been there.

I do like the Chai-something cupcakes by Trophy Cupcakes. Very rich- I can only eat one, and I'm a 25 year old male...

@13, you're a fucking twat, Will. You think those turds QFC and PCC sells are bagels? The only half-way decent bagels in Seattle are at the Bagel Oasis on 65th, and even they are a far cry.

Being lectured about market demand by Will in Seattle. I ask you.

seriously, Cupcake Royale are awful. the frosting is way too sugary, the cake is crumbling every bite and if not for the good coffee and lack of competition, they reign in the emerald city. yes there is trophy but it too needs some help.

fnarf - agreed. someone please make a great bagel and you will make some serious dough (pun intended [and stupid]).

I used to buy them from Bagel Oasis back when it was in downtown Fremont, frequently getting the baker's dozen at happy hour.

But that was when I worked early in the morning and got home in time.

@14, Jody; I just wanted to say I was skeptical of Cupcake Royale when I first moved here and my first experience was very bland. (basically, a flavorless cake for a flavored icing)

Recently I found myself in Madrona during "cupcake happy hour" (about a month ago) and gave it another shot. Your cupcakes are much moister and much tastier! I'm not sure what has changed but I really think they've improved and people need to re-try to know for sure. The carrot cake, double chocolate are especially tasty.
