Reading Today

Posted by on Sat, Mar 28, 2009 at 10:03 AM

(No, the video doesn't have anything to do with the readings today, but WHAT THE FUCK, YouTube?)

Two readings today.

Susan Arnout Smith reads at Third Place Books today from Out at Night, which is the latest in a series. The plot has to do with a crime scene technician being linked to a murder by a cell phone. The crime scene technician is probably innocent, since the linking to a murder happens fairly early in the book.

And at the Hugo House, we have the second half of a graduation reading for the Professional Development Program for Writers. I don't have any more information for the reading than that.

I think today might be a stay-in-and-read day. I don't have quite as much cleavage as Super Amanda but might I suggest some Dickens?

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.

Yes, you might suggest Dickens. I have unexpectedly been in a Dickensian mood lately myself.

Proving once again that with enough cleavage on display, people will listen to you ramble on about just about anything.

The best way to read Dickens is to have it read out loud to you, as Dickens himself meant for it to be experienced. The best reader of Dickens I've found is Frederick Davidson, the late reader for Blackstone Audio Books.

Damn fine stuff. He also doe a phenomenal job with P.G. Wodehouse and Jerome K. Jerome's "Three Men in a Boat".

The Old Curiosity Shop is nigh-unreadable. And I agree with Oscar Wilde: One would have to have a heart of stone to read the death of Little Nell without laughing.

Super Amanda managed to make both Dickens and boobies boring. Congratulations.

Generally I'm all about cleavage and books, but this was just off-putting.
