Today in Rube Goldberg Devices

Posted by Paul Constant on Fri, Mar 27, 2009 at 11:37 AM

Yesterday, I posted video of a neat, real-life Rube Goldberg device made by someone with way too much time on his hands. Slog tipper Gary directs us to this website and he says:

just click on the link, turn on your sound, and do nothing else but watch:

It's pretty great. Thanks, Gary.

No. The whole reason rube goldberg devices are even worth looking at is that somebody went to all that work and figured out how to make it do those crazy things. You think about how many tries it must have taken to get the timing just right. Flash and other CG fakery don't do it. Especially when you realize that a skilled Flash programmer could have made that do a thousand interesting different (interactive!) things rather than just moving cutouts around on the screen.

Dutch is so relaxing, because you can't understand it yet it's funny-looking. "Broodrooster"!

Am reading "Rube Goldberg vs. the Machine Age" from the SPL. A lot of the drawings in it are only funny with their associated captions, which in turn are funny enough to stand alone.

"Buy automobile (A) for $275 and hire chauffeur to drive in back of you on windy day - motion of belt (B), attached to front wheel, is communicated to belt (C) which turns tickler (D) - pickle-spaniel (E) laughs until he chokes and falls off platform (F) hitting catch (G) and opening box (H) - balloon (I), with suspended piece of cheese (J)..."

That's why I said "Rube Goldberg devices" and not "Rube Goldberg drawings", Paul. It's like the difference between a stoner talking about building a submarine or a trebuchet or whatever, and a stoner actually building one.
