Reading Tonight

There's a lot going on tonight, including the "3rd ranked Slam poet IN THE WORLD, y’all" at the Poetry Slam.

Town Hall is hosting a seminar called Sustainable Path: Climate Change and Water. According to this guy, even Jesus cares about climate change. A commenter on his blog feels differently, though:

Now a day global warming controversy is very hype. NASA sciencetists completely work on global warming research. According the sciencetists after 30 year earth is completely effected by global warming.

At Elliott Bay Book Company, Cara Black returns with the ninth in her Parisian mystery series, Murder in the Latin Quarter. This is a Soho Crime mystery. If you like international fiction and mysteries, you should check out the Soho Crime series—they're literary mysteries set all around the world and, more importantly, not written by some doofus in America with a travel guide and Wikipedia.

Susan Jane Gilman reads from Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven at Third Place Books. This is her memoir about backpacking through China. (I think it's fair to assume that Gilman is not the woman on the cover of this book.)

And at the Burke Museum, George Johnson reads from The Ten Most Beautiful Experiments. The book came out last year, and reportedly Johnson gave an excellent reading when he came through town last time. It's about how science and art are not mutually exclusive. This is the reading of the night.

The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.

(Gold Star Commenter for this one is leek, who says "Wow. Can that be a nominee for worst book cover to go with worst book website from the other day?")

Wow. Can that be a nominee for worst book cover to go with worst book website from the other day?

That book cover is annoying to the nth degree. Especially coupled with the fact that the book is a "memoir about backpacking through China." The only way it could be more annoying is if it was about backpacking through India...

What was that book Aislinn reviewed way back? Why do I have a feeling this one is going to be similarly bad?

My response when someone starts to breathlessly tell me picaresque stories of their backpacking trips through Mongolia, China, Laos etc is simply: "Sorry dude, Eddie Vedder is not going to score the soundtrack to your life....

From the cover, I'd say it's a memoir about "whoring my way across China" which I'd frankly be much more interested in. Especially if the author was bisexual.

Naked backpacking, one of those concepts that seems hot, but is probably really gross.

From what I've gleaned on the web, it's more of a story about setting out to whore across China, but instead finding out that your traveling buddy is seriously mentally ill and getting you into some serious political trouble. It wouldn't surprise me to find out that the woman in the picture is about to strip off and get arrested.

"Why is the pretty lady wearing so many clothes?"

And of course all the hype completely discredits global warming. Like a movie everyone's talking about or a rock band everyone's listening to, as soon as something becomes excessively hyped, it loses all credibility. Uh, yeah.

Yes, that comment on my blog wasn't the most intelligent contribution to the conversation. Not really sure why that was the quote selected. Thanks for the link in any case...
