Today on DVD

Posted by on Tue, Mar 24, 2009 at 11:22 AM

Quantum of Solace is out on DVD today. Jen Graves thought it was kind of weak sauce:

Bond immediately set out for vengeance, and the new movie, Quantum of Solace, picks up right where Casino Royale left off. Quantum's plot was hatched and scripted by a team of producers and writers who began their work while Casino Royale was still shooting, and frankly, it is a mess by comparison.

Also out today is Bolt, which Megan Seling kinda sorta loved:

Bolt isn't as fantastic looking as The Incredibles, and it isn't as thoughtful and tender as Wall•E, but it is a movie about a goddamn puppy that thinks he's a real-life superhero so... of course I'm going to love it!

There's also a movie called Careful by Guy Maddin, that's newly released on DVD today. I'm a big Guy Maddin buff, so I'll let you know what I think when I watch it. (Careful is also available to watch on Netflix Watch Instantly.) It's about the residents of an alpine village who have to keep vewy, vewy quiet or else they'll all be crushed in an avalanche.

In the straight-to-DVD-release bin, Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter is released today. it's the cartoon version of the pirate comic book from Watchmen, with voice work by Gerard Butler. Also on that DVD is Under the Hood, which is a 40-minute-or-so documentary adaptation of a superhero's biography from Watchmen.

TV shows on DVD include Andy Richter Controls the Universe (I'm really excited for this one) and In Treatment, Gabriel Byrne's HBO therapy drama. Also, The Venture Brothers Season 3, Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 1, and The Riches Season 2.

Many more listings, including a movie about killer locusts, a horror movie about food poisoning, and a movie in which a prison-bound Rob Schneider is taught kung-fu by David Carradine, are over here.

The good news: Quantum of Solace is the last Ian Fleming book. They've all been made into movies now.

No more James Bond. Yippee!

Not so. They still have "The Hildebrand Rarity" and "James Bond in New York." Two short stories, but so was "Quantum of Solace" and a few others. Plus they haven't used any of the plots for decades ("Casino Royale" excepting), just the names. James Bond films forever!

Next week is the CTHULHU DVD release, with multiple commentary.

I hear if you play it backwards it has the Jonas Brothers singing the praises of Ia! Ia! Cthulhu Fthagn!

Elva's doing a DVD watch party to "christen" her new HDTV big screen set ... if you see strange lights flickering and storm clouds arise whilst the elder gods whisper in the wind, you'll know we're in trouble.

Quantum was trying so hard to be like The Borne Identity with rough camera work during action shots. I hate that type of filming it is so damn disorienting. I also think the stunts do not have to be as tight when shooting like that. The producers figure the constant movement of hand held shots make the action better. It makes it worse and cheep and look like a knock off of the Borne films.
Get back to camera work that shows a great shot. It also is a way of saving money too by while riding on the wave of popularity of the Borne films.

You mean Bourne, right? The book has nothing to do with the movies, it was a total rewrite.

Sorry yes Bourne
Just rushing to get the rant out.
I just feel the look of the Bourne films and their popularity influenced the bond film.
