These are the artists shortlisted for the Henry Art Gallery's new award, The Brink: Respectively, Isabelle Pauwels (Vancouver, B.C.), Gareth Moore (Vancouver, B.C.), Isaac Layman (Seattle), Matt Browning (Seattle), Aaron Flint Jamison (Portland), and the apparently basically un-Googlable Alex Felton (Portland) (that last image came up under his name, but we have no idea what or whether it has to do with him).

The prize is $12,500 plus a solo show at the Henry, and the winner will be announced April 17.

What do I think of this list? I'll tell you when I find out more about Jamison, Moore, Felton, and Pauwels.

Gareth Moore and Isabelle Pauwels are solid Vancouver picks, both represented by Catriona Jeffries. Jamison makes Veneer Magazine

and is collaborating with Curtis Knapp from Marriage Records on a still-veiled art space. Felton's new to me, but was in a show at Small A Projects when they were still in Portland: http://www.smallaprojects.com/exhibition…

Maybe Eric F should be the art critic for the STRANGER.....

No. He is way too informed and asks questions instead of blurting out emotional responses and half truths!

I agree with you Delia! How can you not know who Gareth Moore and Isabelle Pauwels are? I guess you missed his show at Catriona/her show at Presentation House last month while you were busy failing to attend the opening of How Soon is Now... which you probably still haven't seen. Irresponsible regional art criticism issues aside, I couldn't be more pleased with this list. Go Gareth!

That first photo looks like Erica Barnett after finishing off a bottle of QFC wine-purchased with a five finger discount.

Wow, grouches. I was just sharing that I didn't know which artist to root for yet, not that I've no clue who these people are. Thanks for the Felton links, Kristan.

Update: The Felton links are unsatisfying. I'm working on a piece about all the artists for next week's paper.

Please don't waste your time (and ours) writing another list-style article about artists everyone is familiar with.

I agree with frowny face. There is an article to be written here, but it should be written months down the road in the form of a review of the winner's show. Until then, let it be. You are an art critic who is paid for your (hopefully) thoughtful writing on your region's scene, not a breaking news reporter.

My up-to-the-minute lifestyle report of the favorite breakfast cereals of these household-name artists will be out soon.

Breakfast cereal? See, there was a post awhile back, maybe even on another blog, that talked about Fruit Loops in Seattle art. That's what I'm talking about. Journalism. It's like East Coast vs. West Coast, you know?
It's what people want to read.

i hope that the henry's example of including canadian artists will lead to similar opportunities for american artists in canada. from what i have seen, canadian institutions are predominately geared to supporting canadian artists. if someone can point out bilateral examples in canada i'd be much appreciative. they don't count if they include the "first opportunities will be given to canadian born candidates." this would be something i'd like to hear more about.
