Tomorrow In Books and Film

Posted by on Mon, Mar 23, 2009 at 3:51 PM

3c18/1237848568-pighunt_poster-203x300.jpgTomorrow, as part of a launch party for arty-culture-y website The Rumpus, there will be a screening and reading at Northwest Film Forum. The screening is for a film called Pig Hunt that is apparently a viciously gory movie that crosses Deliverance with Jaws. I'm not usually into movies that proudly proclaim how gory they are, but this one is co-written by Robert Mailer Anderson, who wrote a great debut novel called Boonville that I heartily recommend.

fcc8/1237848322-boonville.jpgThe reading part of the night is awesome local author Ryan Boudinot, who may or may not be reading from his debut novel which is due to be published by Grove Atlantic this fall. Boudinot will read before the film, and after the film, people will move down the street to Vermillion for a party. Anderson will be in attendance to answer questions about the film, too. This is clearly your best Tuesday night entertainment bargain.

I was not that impressed with Boonville. As far as niche books, it speaks perfectly to the suburban/small town northern Californian, which is great if you don't mind cutting off that giant chunk of the map that may not be able to relate. Add to that Mr. Anderson's all-too-rushed stream-of-consciousness ending and random inserts of shock for shock value dialect (the phrase "smelled like vaginal infection" comes to mind) and the cracks start showing. Every character in the novel besides the protagonist(s) is two-dimensional at best. The one saving grace is the unapologetic way he presents human flaw. That alone doesn't necessarily make up for the bad in this book, though.
