Chris Brown and Rihanna: The PSA Reenactment

Posted by David Schmader on Fri, Mar 20, 2009 at 9:34 AM

E!'s got the info:

The teen-empowering group DoSomething.org (cofounded by former Melrose Place denizen Andrew Shue) has launched an online PSA that deigns to re-create the alleged attack between the R&B stars in the hopes of inspiring adolescents to confront dating abuse. The brief video begins with a warning about graphic images and notes the following dramatization is based on "actual detective notes...but it happens every day." The clip then shows a young man and woman in a car reenacting the Feb. 8 altercation in which Brown allegedly punched, bit and choked Rihanna, 21, after she accused him of texting a woman with whom he had a previous relationship. Brown, 19, was charged with two felonies and is due to be arraigned April 6. Over the images, a deadpan narrator reads from the actual LAPD affidavit based on Rihanna's description of the smackdown.

As you'll see below, it's properly horrifying.

Ugh. It takes a real man to (allegedly) combine biting and death threats. Here's a video of Rihanna in happier times. Chris Brown can suck it.

We gotta do something,
Before mother earth gets anymore hurt,
We gotta do something!"

What the fuck, Chris Brown. And what the fuck, Rihanna, for going back to him.

Uh, whoever she is, she deserved it. She had the opportunity to get out of the car when he told her to do so. Instead she wanted to play tough-gal. Well suck on this, bitch!

Holla!

She's too young to know how to navigate the emotional and psychological mess she's in. I look back at myself at 20 and am horrified by the abuse I put up with, which comes nowhere even close to this, nor was it played out in the public eye while my status as role model was being determined by everyone but me.

It's easy to get angry at her and admonish her for the choice she's made to get back with him, but I seriously doubt that she even recognizes it as a choice right now.

Best wishes for her and everyone in her situation.

"Well suck on this, bitch!"

I imagine Chris Brown might be hearing that a lot upon incarceration.

(Also, fuck you, asshole troll, for driving me to mildly glorify prison rape, which, like all rape, sucks.)

I wonder if she hit him first.

It's a relatively minor detail, but would certainly change the narrative a bit if it happened.

David, I'm so sorry your thoughtful post got hijacked by trolls. This topic definitely could have led to another great and engaging conversation in comments. Dang.

Prison rape is awesome.
If Oz taught me anything, it's that prison rapes take place at the hands of Chris Meloni, in which case it is most certainly awesome.

...well, except for when it's done with a spoon :S

Great and engaging conversation in Slog? Please, link to some past "great and engaging conversations."

Oh, #11, I am way too un- tech savvy to accomplish something like that. But anyone who reads the comments regularly knows that it can get pretty heated and exciting in comments! When the topic is something that people have strong feelings about, such as relationship abuse, it's interesting, for me anyway, to read their thoughts even if they are oppositional to my own. I guess I was hoping for a little of that this morning.

Why do you come to comments if it's not to engage in conversation?

David:

The huge mystery to me is why Rihanna took Chris Brown back.

This wasn't a little scuffle; he came close to permanently brain damaging her.

@12

We do it for the lulz, we do it for the lulz.

You can't do it = you can't do it.

Put up or shut up. Faggot bitch.

Not to belabor the obvious, but Jesus Christ, Rihanna is hot.

I'd treat her like a goddess, but then I admit I'm a troglodyte next to her. Is Brown going to do serious time for that shit?

@18

You can blame ECB and Savage for this. They asked for it, they're continuing to ask for it, they got it.

This style of writing and behavior + comments = you get these types of comments.

It's not fair to demonize one side or the other, we're all products of our environment and we should be teaching kids in school how to deal with situations like these. They both threw a hissyfit, they both made horrible choices and they can both thank their lucky stars it didn't get any worse. After shoving her head into the car he should have realized what he was doing was wrong, she should have left the car regardless of where they were.

Now the boy will probably be sent to jail, where he'll be up against murderers, child rapists and don't think he won't forget who put him there while he's raped on a daily basis for being a woman beater. Creating an everlasting cycle of violence that makes private companies rich beyond their wildest dreams and destroys the fabric of our society.

@Jonathan:

Lots of reasons. It's not an easy situation.

@19,

I know exactly who to blame for this state of affairs, thanks, and it’s not the Stranger crew. Savage is one of our country's most important independent voices. ECB is a professional journalist who has been an important part of seriously upgrading the Stranger’s news coverage. No one who reads this paper regularly doubts their skills and their commitment to local journalism.

You trolls, on the other hand, are a virus. There's some sad combination of boredom, stupidity and sickness that leads you creeps to hang around websites just to be obnoxious and disrupt other people's conversations. In elementary school we called you kids "problem children,” and you’re the kind of adults we call “sociopaths.” Online you're called "trolls" and except for the vain hope that you'll eventually just embarrass yourselves out of existence or get fired from the jobs that allow you endless internet access, there seems to be very little we can do about you.

And it stinks.

Mahtli69 @8-- No, it doesn't. A woman usually has no way to inflict the same level of physical violence a man does.

Once in college I threw a balled-up paper towel at my boyfriend during an argument, and he grabbed my arms and held them tightly together while he yelled at me. I "started it", but there was no implicit threat of serious harm coming from me.
