The Morning News

Posted by on Thu, Mar 19, 2009 at 9:00 AM

Planet earth: Up to amazing things down in the Nuku'Alofa region.

Natasha Richardson: Dead at 45.

What $1 trillion buys you these days: A little fluctuation here and there.

Krzyzewski's rebuke: "We're not in President Obama's Final Four, and as much as I respect what he's doing, really, the economy is something that he should focus on, probably more than the brackets."

Decision points: The twelve difficult decisions of George W. Bush, as written by George W. Bush, coming soon to a bookstore near you.

In other presidential book deals: Obama to abridge Dreams from My Father for younger readers.

Plow politics: Funny, if you're Seattle's mayor and transportation chief, your streets get plowed first.

Metro: Raking in the stimulus dollars.

And more soothing performances by our planet:

That polar bear video is pretty much the best thing that ever happened to me.

From the snow article

"according to interviews with plow drivers and street crews and thousands of department records analyzed by The Seattle Times."

Who will be left to do investigative journalism after the times?

Stranger isn't going to do it...you just steal stories and links as much as you steal wine.

It's so tragic

Eli,

RE: NCAA

Why are you looking at Fox news for anything?

Here's what Media Matter's Reported:

"Fox and the Associated Press are hyping a statement by Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski that President Obama should focus on fixing the economy, not trying to predict NCAA tournament results:

"Somebody said that we're not in President Obama's Final Four, and as much as I respect what he's doing, really, the economy is something that he should focus on, probably more than the brackets," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said from the Blue Devils' first-round site in Greensboro, N.C.

But Krzyzewski was smiling as he said that, and his very next words -- not reported by the AP or Fox -- were "Why would i care about that? I love the guy, and I think he's gonna be great." "

The twelve difficult decisions of George W. Bush:

1. What shall I eat?
2. How many pretzels should I shove in my smirking maw?
4. Shall I choke?
6. Shall I die?
11. Shall I survive to inflict more misery on the world?

Ehhhh, fuck it. Good enough.

If you like the polar bear video, there's tons more. Netflix everything David Attenborough has ever done. His Life of Birds is even better than his Life of Mammals.

is there some news about a bill introduced to add a 90% tax on bonuses given to employees of firms receiving bailout funds? i'm curious what people here think about that...

Only 90%? I was thinking 110%, myself. Of course, the most egregious offenders live in London, and a great many of them are presumably Brits, so not subject to our taxes. I'm sure they can come up with something on their end, though.

@8 yeah.. that's pretty much my reaction, too. why would they introduce the bill for only 90%? is this a case where you don't make good the enemy of perfect?

"Funny, if you're Seattle's mayor and transportation chief, your streets get plowed first."

@2: you think people are going to stop reporting news just because it's no longer attached to dead trees?
you think all those reporters at the PI and Times are just gonna eat a glock?
No. New ways will be found to make money reporting news. And they probably won't involve dead trees and dinosaurs.

Weren't all the articles from the papers available online so people could email them to other people? How can you stop reporters from reporting? They just have to have a place to put the articles so people can read it. The newspapers might not be doing as well because people want to read it online. Online websites need less reporters? Since when? Are we getting the short end of the stick because the websites are trying to save money? Are they all trying to be like "poor bloggers" now?("Make a Donation!")

What is a "Sounder?"

@15 - what is a clueless n00b.

The Sounders FC is the sold out insanely popular football team (real footy) that Drew Carey will be leading a marching band for as Seattle rocks the house.

But you'd know that if you read news.
