In other hot soccer player news, this:

Ah. That's better.

Also, remember when I said no one cares about soccer? I wasn't wrong.

Check out this photo of the huuuuuuuuuge Sounders rally in Pioneer Square.

What is that, like, twelve people?

Yes, that's 12 people. That is absolutely 12 people. You're spot on, as usual.

Soccer is ninety minutes without commercial breaks or fat-man pauses or stopping the clock. In 90 minutes plus a 10-minute halftime you're out of the stadium. One goes for the sport, not the overpriced beer or nachos or litigious referees.

The "soccer is lame" sentiment in the d-bag media is unjustified. Joe-the-Plumber type sentiments are getting old.

And when was the last time Mariners fans held an impromptu rally?

Dude... get over it. You were wrong about the popularity of soccer. On my way home there were a shit ton of Sounders fans waiting at bus stops, screaming and waving their little Sounders scarves. Traffic on the viaduct was all fucked up.

Real sports don't allow games to end in a tie. The Sounders will be playing to a near empty Qwest Field in less than 5 years. Professional soccer in America is more laughable than the WNBA.

Anyone know what bars are showing the sounders game instead of basketball (which is a game of points that are just statistical fluctuations)

Damn #15 - You beat me to it!

In Cup games (playoff system) soccer is either played to penalty kicks or the whole game is replayed (usually at the other teams venue).

In regular league games soccer can tie, just like the NFL.

Catalina you do know that after making fun of skateboarders some months ago, I've had them stalking me ever since? They are sensitive creatures.

It's worth it, to be sure, especially if you're a bad person such as myself who takes pleasure in cruelty towards ridiculous people. I only want to warn you what you're in for.

EXCELLENT point, Soccer fans. A tie CAN occur in the NFL. Bravo. An event that happens once every few years!

I'm gonna completely change my view of this sport now that it is on par with the NFL.

Maybe if they offered some red wine, more people would show up. QFC has quite a few bottles in the $8.99 range. As a sports organization, I'm sure the Sounders could afford to pay that.

Do you really need the victory of one game to feel good? It is about the whole season. The superior team agonizes in the final minutes when a tie is possible because it feels like a loss. An inferior side can treat a tie as a moral victory.

The americanized NHL did away with ties as well.

Some psych major should stroll by and tell us why americans need resolution in every segement of a sports season when, in soccer at least, the rest of the world looks at the bigger picture.

It's OK to say American soccer or Seattle soccer is not up to snuff, compared to soccer leagues abroad. But why make fun of soccer just 'cause you don't get it?

Posted by PedestrianMe on March 19, 2009 at 5:46 PM

And FWIW, technically a tie CAN also occur in Major League Baseball, for example, if a game is called on account of weather after completing five or more innings, or if both teams run out of substitute players, or if the umpire calls an end to play after an extraordinary number of extra innings.

However, tie games themselves are not counted for league standings (although individual player stats are still counted), unless they are finished or replayed at a later time.

I just wonder about the sports tribalism here. We all live in Seattle shouldn't we root for our teams. All of our teams. We root against other cities. Not dbag it up by saying my balls are better because they are round and not oblong. Should we form our tribal lines around our city not which sport is better?

PS - WNBA sucks

I went to a soccer game once. It was the most boring game that I have ever seen in my life.

Yeah, maybe there are more than 12 soccer fans in the picture but if you subtract the homeless you have something like 18 tops!

Does it come down to the fact that you have to care about the sport or at least some of the players?

I mean baseball is slow...3 hours +. NFL with tv timeouts is 3.5. Soccer is a quick game. 45 minutes halves plus injury time. 10 minutes at halftime. So 100 - 110 minutes.

Every game can seem like a freaking week if you dont give a damn. Ask the zombie looking people dragged to a mariners game.

you do know they are at an alt weekly and this is a blog? right?

perhaps your expectations are set a notch or nine too high.

this is not about defending them, it's about realistic expectations about the supposed "newssource" we're using.

I continue to be amazed that people who live in the USA think that the sports they invented Basketball & NFL or changed Baseball (the English invented Rounders as a kid's game) are the ONLY sports worth following (in indeed the only real sports in the world).

None of the World Series Championships you guys continue to crow about actually involves any other country in the world (with the exception of the Basball one sometimes).

On the other hand a large number of countries in the rest of the world participate in and celebrate four world championships that actually involve the world:

Football (soccer to you, the New Zealanders and us Australians:)played on all continents (with the exception of Antartica)

Cricket: played in over a dozen former British Empire countries

Rugby Union: Most Western European countries, and a big chunk of the westernised former British Empire countries

Rugby League: Ditto

A large number of players in both of the Rugby codes and Football regularly spend time playing in other countries. In the two rugby codes there are even some players who move between the codes.

Soooo, let me see if I have this straight: the classic american douche bag sports fan HATES soccer? The hipster who thinks all sports are awful hates it out of reflex.....and I should be offended why exactly?

I LOVE this game more than most things, and no I don't have shitty taste in music, film, art, etc... and No, I don't swill the millah lites at the neon sports bar. I'm kinda happy with the average soccer fan in this country, and even more so here in the PNW.

Kind to one another because we are a minority. Enthusiastic, because we have to answer 25 dumb questions every time there is an event/match we are excited about. And btw- a match ending in a draw actually is generally QUITE dramatic. How many american sports can have a WINNER until the final second? And while we are at it, that happens a LOT, and it beats all finales in any sport anywhere. But that's subjective....

I love welcoming anyone into learning about the game (our world cup involves the WORLD...I'm listening other sports...) and if it takes good, if not, oh well, I'm not some demon determined to make you understand why the ones that love this game, LOVE THIS GAME.

So thanks for mocking soccer one more time. I have some fish and a shotgun if you need an easier shot.
