Redefining The Word "Marriage"

Posted by on Wed, Mar 18, 2009 at 1:34 PM

The gays didn't do it. Mirriam-Webster did.

(1): the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law (2): the state of being united to a person of the same sex in a relationship like that of a traditional marriage b: the mutual relation of married persons : wedlock c: the institution whereby individuals are joined in a marriage

Via JoeMyGod—and, yes, the American Talibangelists are not pleased.

Wasn't there a Slog troll who recently tried to say that marriage is only between a man and a woman because that's how it's defined in the dictionary? Ha ha, sucker.

Yes, because the meanings of words are permanent, ever-fixed, and unchanging.

Well that's at least three words we've taken over.

We must not stop until every word has homosexual in it's definition! Even "straight", and "heterosexual"!

Um, that would be Merriam-Webster, Dan...

I'm waiting for conservatives to reject the "liberal Merriam-Webster Dictionary" and publish their own, in the fashion of the ridiculous Conservapedia.

This is just ONE step accomplished in the Homosexual Agenda. Next it will be gender neutral toilettes on airplanes, as many gender neutral words in the dictionary as possible (we'll no long have to say aviatrix), and last but not least EVERYONE will want to look as sophisticated and well dressed as Gay Americans.

Skip to agenda item number 4 if you're already looking sophisticated.

@16, you'll have to pry the word "aviatrix" out of my cold, dead hands.

@9 Conservatives already hate the dictionary because it has "bad" words in there. Fuck, bitch, sex, fun, freedom, shit... Good "christian" southerners don't read books like that.

Again, in Canada, Spain etc etc.. same sex marriage exists. it is a real thing. Keeping it out of the dictionary will not change that.

It's such a silly thing, the response. A dictionary is a record and reflection upon the language we speak day to day. The dictionary doesn't decide anything. Someone needs to let them know this, because it's clear they don't understand it.

16 - I get that you're being snarky, but really, isn't a lot of the push for gender neutral terms also from the feminist movement?
