RE: A Note to Our Readers

Posted by on Wed, Mar 18, 2009 at 1:23 PM

A satellite image of the scene of my carrot crime:

The neighborhood is Chisipite, Harare. That is my house (I still own it), and the school with the garden (Oriel Boys High School) is across the street.

When's the last time you visited, Charles? I assume you can't go there now. Is the house occupied? Do you miss it?

So you didn't make it very far before you got hungry.

My house? Looks more like my compound. My estate. My game reserve.

@5 - It is a different culture, therefor we cannot judge. It is physically impossible to judge.

@4, hahahah hilariously good point. I guess when you're a child running away, even a few blocks can seem like a trek across the country.

It looks beautiful there.

i love this post. it's great, and funny.

i find it strangely amusing to use google maps to find far away places i've been to.

for instance, here are some basketball courts in tonatico, mexico, that i played on some ten years ago.

can't you see the 'carrot' of trees in the middle?

it's fake.

@5: I grew up on a farm. If you think that's luxurious (it's not even very big) you should see my place.

@6, or perhaps not so impossible. Here, for comparison, a few miles away, is glen norah, a working-class neighborhood.

How ironic that you live on Enterprise Rd, Charles. Very amusing post.

@12, are you trying to make a point? Charles is not working class? That offends you how, exactly?

@5 - what's your point? My neighborhood looks like Calcutta from 1,000 ft, I've still got millionaire neighbors.

@14/Fnarf, don't get your panties in a bunch. I'm not offended, irate, paranoid, or anything else -- merely responding to the ignoramus at 6 who claims it is "physically impossible to judge" the comparative quality of Charles' Harare home.

@18, my apologies, sir.

You could also have read any of Charles's earlier posts about his life in Zimbabwe. His father was a top government official once. One would expect a fairly decent house.
