"Inheritance"
by DanCreaking floorboards in a house that witnessed
three generations of farmers born,
furrows of dark soil and dusty yards,
where horses remember and grizzled goats see
boys dropping apples into a steel tub,
girls sneaking eggs past roosters with harlequin feet,
us marching out upon fields still soft with dew.
Harlequin feet!
