Kindle-Ripping

Posted by on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 11:20 AM

Amazon.com has sent a legal notice to a website complaining about a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

MobileRead.com forum moderator Alexander Turcic said in a post on Thursday that although he did not believe the program violated the law, the site would "voluntarily follow their request and remove links and detailed instructions related to it." Turcic said that, contrary to Amazon's claim, his site never "hosted" the software.

Apparently, the software, called Kindlepid.py, allows other (legally purchased) e-books to be read on the Kindle. The story suggests that the software is still available for download here. It's interesting to me that Amazon doesn't mind if Kindle books are read on other readers (like the iPhone), but they want the Kindle device itself to remain within their Kindle kingdom. We'll see how that works out.

"Kindle kingdom" = Kindlegarten. E-book readers will never be popular until e-books are as easy to buy, sell, and share as printed books.
