Our Comic Book President

Posted by on Thu, Mar 12, 2009 at 4:27 PM

fc18/1236900212-oblam_a.jpgObama's been in so many comics now that it's not worth posting about his many appearances. I think this is the most any president's been in comics since Reagan, who once famously turned into a snake beast and fought Captain America (all the way at the bottom of the post). And yet something about this Youngblood cover, to the left, with a gun-totin' Obama drawn by Rob Liefeld, still inspires me to share it with the world. Maybe it's the ridiculous lack of proportion in the drawing of Obama and Chapel, the skull-faced soldier behind him. Or maybe it's the fact that it barely looks like Obama. Or maybe it's just that it's all so goddamnably ugly.

Anyway: Comics! They're not just for kids anymore! They're also for people who think they'll be worth something one day because the President has a laser gun on the cover.

It's Liefield. It gets worse. Much worse.

Liefeld isn't fit to eat the peanuts out of my poop. he is one of three reasons why I gave up comics from 1992-2005.

I can't figure out why it's cool to like Fletcher Hanks (http://www.fletcherhanks.com/WELCOME.htm…) but not Rob Leifeld. Will Leifeld be the Hanks of 2059?

Liefeld is such an asshole. Look at the way Chapel (the BIG MF-er) is holding that gun. You'd think after 20 years the man could learn how to draw a hand holding a gun. It looks like he has one wormy finger.

and obama's left hand has been chopped off at the wrist, or maybe it is in some sort of retarded other dimension to make up for it, which is classic liefield.

that, and the pouches (which you will see in the link at #3).

at least Obama doesn't have something making his left eye glow (cable, shatterstar...)

this doesn't change the fact that I still have 3 issues of Youngblood #1, two in a bag - i bought those for $2.50 each when I was 12, so I can't really rationalize getting rid of them. (I am not the only one, admit it)

Why why why do you insist on torturing us with Liefeld's attempts at art?! That's just sick and wrong. I stopped reading comics a few years back and the #1 thing I don't miss is seeing Liefield's "art" on the shelves when I picked up my crack every Wednesday.

That doesn't look anything like Obama - and does he have camel toe in that drawing?

Rob Liefield is the Wolfgang Puck of comic artists.

Um, yeah, that looks nothing like Obama.

However, I think it's important to note that the reason why Obama's been in so many comics is because Obama himself is a HUGE, ENORMOUS, GEEK! He collects Spider-Man and Conan. He makes Star Trek references to his wife! We have a Geek President for the first time in history, and this makes me really, really happy! :)

The Amazing Spider-man (#583) that featured Obama also had atrocious art. http://www.marvel.com/news/comicstories.…

And Chapel appears looks really pretty friggin' similar to Crossbones, a villain in Marvel comics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossbones_…)

All that said, I'm with #12. I love the fact that Obama is a comics fan. I feel like it's my "in." if I ever get to meet him. (Hey, how do you feel about [insert name of Amazing Spider-man story line here]?)

Sorry, second link in #13 above not working. Try http://www.marvel.com/universe/Crossbone… instead.

This is kind of surprising, since Liefeld is a crazy-ass end-times believing christian now (seriously, he just put out this title about an ex-mercenary fighting Satan during armageddon that he co-wrote with his megachurch pastor. Wow Rob, did you really need to give us more reasons to want to vomit sulfuric acid all over you?) so I'd have assumed he was not a big Obama fan.

Although maybe he's trying to draw some kind of parallel between him and Chapel (who, if my 12 year old brain remembers correctly, was evil in the comics and had AIDS and killed Spawn) by putting them on the same cover and giving them both ridiculous, badly drawn weaponry.

If I were given a choice between going back in time to kill Hitler and going back in time and chopping off Rob Liefeld's hands ... man. I mean, I'd go with Hitler, but it would REALLY be a hard choice.

@3

"If you asked Rob Liefeld to draw a diagram of the uterus he'd put on a pair of gauntlets and punch the shit out of your chalkboard."

I can't stop laughing.
