Ew-ew-ew!

Posted by on Thu, Mar 12, 2009 at 11:17 AM

Some things just shouldn't be drawn. Teenage Calvin gets it on with Teenage Susie Derkins, and Hobbes watches. (Mildly NSFW.) Teenage or adult Calvin cartoons are all the rage, these days, apparently; I saw this one a few days ago. Clearly, if these are the two poles of the spectrum of this fan-fiction-y genre, the plug should be immediately pulled.

(Via what has become, in the last month or so, my new favorite comics blog.)

Nope. Won't look.

Y'know, I read the description and decided I just don't really need to see that.

Oh come on, it's not that bad. Paul makes it out to be porn, but it's not. I like it.

It shows Calvin and Susie making out, nothing more. Rather tame, really.

It's actually pretty tame, as far as Rule 34 comics go. No nudity!

Not going to look, even if I think Suzie Derkins would grow up to be hot.

Ewwwwww.

It's weird to think that an entire generation of kids is going to grow up without learning to read comic strips or comic books. You have to imagine that even web comics will fall by the wayside, since the whole language and conventions of comics, from the left to right reading to word balloons to panel timing, will be as archaic as vaudeville within 30 years or so.

Actually, it seems more like a commentary on the death of innocence. And since when did making out equal gettin' it on?

I don't know if two isolated examples equals "all the rage," but I think they're both good pieces of art. The one about passing Hobbes along is a little precious, sure, but it still presents a new way of looking at the characters. And the one about angry Hobbes is good for a laugh and, again, takes a new look at what it means to be an innocent child.

Obviously these are both a bit jokey, and exist outside of the real Calvin and Hobbes universe. If you're such a C&H purist that you can't stomach someone's well-drawn, playful, out-of-universe one-off, then gosh you must lead a very serious life.

That's kind of a turn on.

It's really not that big a deal, everyone! :)

First of all, it's not like it's Calvin porn. You want young, innocent Calvin, read the originals, but Calvin has a right to grow up, too! ;)

Secondly, you might want to have a chat with Dan about sex-positivity and how it's not dirty or bad or wrong. :)

Calvin has a right to grow up only if Watterson draws him grown up. It's sad that everyone makes free with this man's creation. If that makes me "serious," fine. I know I wouldn't want to do all that work only to be ripped off.

Just please, don't link to any Calvin-furry porn. I know it's out there, I don't need to know any more about it.

Those were both sort of sweet and funny. This is basically just fan fiction (and, as @9 points out, it's not that bad, quality wise), so I don't see it as "ripping off" Watterson at all. It's clearly non-Watterson, non C&H canon, and nobody seems to be trying to use it to make money, so I don't see what the big deal is (unless Watterson has come out and said, stop, I don't want people doing C&H fanfic drawings)...

I'm with you, LeslieC. Watterson was so careful with his allowable marketing of Calvin's images, I don't like to see ANY other use of his images, period. It has nothing to do with being sex-positive or not - I hate the peeing Calvin truck stickers too.

#7, my son reads Bugs Bunny comic books - new ones! I don't see comics disappearing soon.

Still not as bad as that adult Calvin rip-off "Frazz"

Where is Susie's latex glove? I'm confused.

Not nearly as offensive as the nauseating Calvin (and sometimes Susie) kneeling in supplication at the base of a scary, long-shadow casting cross.

If you want to see something TRULY "Ew-ew-ew" worthy, you have to look at "The Simpson's" porn...

update for anyone who is still following this admittedly older thread: dude whose blog it is at the "this one" link is a serious douche, IMO. Just saying.

@23: Yeah, I didn't have a problem with it. What's your beef, Paul?

as long as these are one time comics, i don't have any logical problems with them. but i do have a pretty strong defensive reaction to anyone tampering with the calvin & hobbes universe, it's not any rational thing, it's just being protective of the sanctity of the stuff from my childhood.

my only worry would be that some jackass would try to do a whole comic series of calvin as a teen/adult. which to me would just be stupid. calvin only works as a character if he's a kid.

I also think it's sweet. Calvin and Susie seem to really like each other. I'm a sucker for true love.

All right, I looked, and I didn't die. I was expecting a true Rule 34 comic and not what was actually there, which is much more tame.

I thought they were sweet.

PS My kids read comic strips.
