The Horse

Posted by on Wed, Mar 11, 2009 at 3:31 PM

This AP Photo/Mediafax photo, which is part of a story concerning the daughter, Elena Basescu, of the Romanian President, Traian Basescu (she wants a seat in the European Parliament)...
8985/1236809497-aleqm5g10qxpfr8wcnyirbpy6pyrimzfpg.jpg
...does the bizarre content of this photo reveal a massive gap between my customs and the customs of the Romanian world? Or has the content nothing to do with Romanian culture, and everything to do with the young woman on the horse? I can't tell which it is.

Euro nepotism, sounds to me like. And the horsey set -- is it 1913 again?

It begs many questions, to be sure.

You're implying Catherine The Greatism. None too subtly, I might add.

Romania has consistently excellently entertaining Eurovision entries, so they're fine with me. (This year's is one to watch, although it's still not a patch on their sadly disqualified 2007 candidate Dracula, My Love.)

In Romania, this is not odd at all. All Romanian furniture is horse-based.

@3: Catherine the Great liked the horse *officers*, not the horses. And because she was a female monarch who acted in the manner of nearly every male monarch ever, well, we end up with your statement.

It's a really beautiful image. But there's something troubling about it, too.

Obviously, thanks.

Did Catherine actually horse it up? No.

Do lots of people think she did because of a popular myth from history times? Yep.

Do people actually do it with horses and sometimes die from it? Yep. Ask Charles.

Cheer up.

It's the fact that it's a woman. With cleavage. And her legs spread. And a horse.

It's just you, Charles.

@11: I just feel like I have to stick up for the interesting female monarchs on occasion. (But she'd probably just have someone killed, so she doesn't really need my help, does she? Also, she's dead.)

I think Charles' filmography suggests equal interest in the (actual, supposed, and alleged) equine pursuits of both sexes.

The bulk of his Slog posts do not suggest that. But, he is a shining beacon of hetero perv intellectualism, and a local treasure.

(@14 he didn't take the photograph, he didn't pose in the photograph, he questions the bizarre content, which I think we can all agree is bizarre, right, I mean who hangs this picture in their office I mean jesus h)

@17

As far as afterlife 'so how did you die?' conversations go, I'd say death by horsecockery is pretty dang interesting. Maybe they don't have wikipedia there and she can use the story as a great anecdote at parties.

I also prefer 'Tsarina' to 'Czarina.'

Catherine was a German in a Slavic court. The Russian nobility circulated that untrue story to discredit her and german forces in the court, as part of the eternal tension between East and West. F'reals.

the horse is a trophy horse - well trained to do this stunt

the lady looks fine to me, but as a gay man, yes, the horse looks fine too

and Charles has one mind set, pussy, can't you folks who work with him keep his needs met

so unDan, who preaches sex, to employ a sex starved male ... that might be NEWS

All FINE today - but cold out

She's hot.

But it implies she is royal, or at least of noble blood.

Xena actually is a blond from the land of Kiwis.

Catherine the Great was power mad, and a cock nympho - she did animals, and the biggest army guys she could find - tons of both -- Do remember the Czarina had unlimited power at her fingertips and vast wealth - ah, the old Russia.

Now that is the movie which awaits Hollywood, Catherine and horse cocks, the real thing and the real thing on a guy..

Catherine the Great did not have sex with horses. I believed that story when I was 12, too, but then I grew up and took some history classes.

"my customs"?

What, dont people in Romania make movies about horse fucking?
Or post endless pictures of breasts and butts, and then claim it only "tummies" that appeal?
Or beat dead horses, most often the one called Marxism?

I thought those "customs" were not only ubiquitous, clearly intellectually superior, but destined to prevail, now that we have suffered the failure of neo-liberalism.
