Zoologists find a lot of hate packed in the center of a relationship between one chimp and Swedish society.

A male chimpanzee in a Swedish zoo planned hundreds of stone-throwing attacks on zoo visitors, according to researchers.

Keepers at Furuvik Zoo found that the chimp collected and stored stones that he would later use as missiles.

Further, the chimp learned to recognise how and when parts of his concrete enclosure could be pulled apart to fashion further projectiles.

There has been scant evidence in previous research that animals can plan for future events.

Science might have stumbled upon the origins of terrorism. For the chimp, it is at the basic level of stones; for humans, it is now at the level of airplanes. But between these technological extremes, is there a common core or continuum? Is the hate in the ape the same as the hate in Atta? If so, then a genealogy of ressentiment would best explain (best breakdown) the dark nature of this profound (or ancient) form of hate.

You're a day late Charles. Bethany wrote about this yesterday.

aren't you of the sarte school of thought that animals are just bio-bots with no emotions? does a robot feel "ressentiment"?

If you tease or torture an animal long enough they eventually snap.

@ 4. Yeah, but she didn't mention the origins of terrorism.

Maybe they should have questioned why their monkey was asking for so many rocks.

@2, you know, i probably saw it here on slog, and forgot that i saw it on slog, but this matter about hate and the age got me thinking this morning and so i posted it with more of that in mind--atta the ape.

The Slog had a bit about the way chimp's will drag a dead baby around in desperation. The origins of hate appear close to the origins of love.

No way. People need to realize these chimps don't live in a zoo. They are imprisoned. Everyone knows chimps & humans share 99% of their DNA; how do you think a human would react to incarceration? If I was in jail & had stones within arm's reach, I'd be hucking them at anyone who came near me.

@5 I should have also added and if you torture and annoy a human over a period of time they will also fight back.

I'm surprised it took this long for anyone to notice that monkeys, and apes do plan ahead.

maybe the monkey was throwing rocks at signs praising Dan White

I just read a science article last night that animals can't plan ahead - only humans can!! Ha ha - wrong again! There is no difference between animals and humans. We are animals. Duh. We just dress nicer. For now.

This chimp is my hero. He's never given in! No knee jerk reactions for him. He's a planner.

I have his picture as my desk top picture.

Birds plan for future events ALL THE TIME. Birds barely have brains at all.

"Scant evidence in previous research that animals can plan"?

Have these people never noticed any actual animals before?

It's hardly news that animals plan. They do have brains, you know. They learn and they solve problems and have emotional lives, too.

Emotional lives? Are you sure? I'm about 60% convinced that PEOPLE don't have emotional lives, let alone birds and insects and whatnot. Behavior is instinct.

Seriously...

You must be some sort of race mixing traitor...

Look at the crime stats in the CD, Renton, etc... where all the darkies live. Prove me wrong.

Why is Africa such a shithole? Answer: It's run by Africans.

The chimp planning a rampage is no different than a thug from the hood boosting a car and raping a white female college student. No difference except levels of sentience. The Chimp wins in that department too.

The kind of crime you find in places like CD, Renton, etc is a side effect of poverty, not skin color. Although I suppose that if all crime is related to skin color, the criminals running Wall Street these days must all be black?

On top of being a racist, you are clearly a moron if you think Africa can be summed up in something so simple as "It's run by Africans." Perhaps you should actually study the history of the continent and educate yourself as to how it has been well and truly fucked by, well, white people.

Not that anything I say will do any good. You see what you want to see. Funny how the people who say "prove me wrong" are always the people who will ignore or gloss over anything they don't like.
