Today in Pie

Pies & Pints on 65th celebrates its fifth birthday today with $5 savory pies, $5 imperial pints of Guinness (that's a proper 20 ounces), and $5 Guinness chocolate cake. Stranger reader-reviewers nearly universally love this place as a hangout and for its pies (which are handmade daily and involve fresh/local ingredients as much as possible—the beef is from Misty Isle Farms on Vashon, yum).

And the High 5 Pie people kindly sent over some of their "Flipsides," individual-sized foldover fruit pies (available at Fuel Coffee). While they are not quite as earth-shatteringly great as the pie from Shoofly Pie in West Seattle, they're quite good. The cherry filling was noteworthy: nice and tart, and some had leaked out and caramelized on the bottom of the crust. (Dan Savage was asked to consume/opine, but shockingly Mr. Sweet Tooth does not like pie. Truly, he is un-American.)

To be fair, an imperial ounce is a little smaller than ours, so that's only about 19 of our ounces. But it is a better amount.

My enthusiasm for Pies and Pints is tempered a bit by the fact that the last time we went they DIDN'T HAVE ANY PIES.

And not liking pie is a capital offense in Fnarf's Empire, so you'd better keep preventing that from happening, Dan.

shockingly Mr. Sweet Tooth does not like pie.

I could have guessed that.

I love Fuel, but the Flipsides aren't as good as hoped, which makes me sad. Not enough filling, too much crust.

I get all my savory pies made courtesy of Sweeney Todd.

I knew when I saw "Today in Pies by Bethany Jean Clement" this would be about beef pies. This is a progressive blog -- please no more beef! It's like if Paul Constant only posted about books by Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilly or if Eric Grandy only posted about Christian rock bands.

How the #@$% can somebody not like pie? What, does Dan not like bread? Does Dan not like food in bread? WTF?

I love Pies and Pints. I generally hate everything north of 55th simply for being inconvenient, but Pies and Pints is worth crossing the border for. That said, I wouldn't go during any sort of promotional event. When they are busy, they are slow.

Dan may be un-american, but watch out, he's about to take over all the spots on the "most commented" list again.

@6: They have three vegetarian pies. Please bother knowing what you're talking about before you post.

Alright, I admit it. "Heh," Will in Seattle. You get a "heh."

@8: Pies are slow food. One should avoid P&P if in a hurry. I recommend it to anyone cursed with being around 65th though.

@8: You should come and hang out with us more often, even though it is inconvenient. We will show you the wonderfulness that is the Pinehurst Pub.

I totally agree about Pies & Pints being slow, though. It's a victim of its own success.

There are many things I prefer over pie, but I don't understand flat-out not liking it. Even if you don't like the crust, just eat the filling. The filling is always good.

If a man doesn't like pie, it's because he hasn't tried enough. Either that, or he's just a dick.

The range of pie is extraordinary, from nothing but sugar lemon meringue to fruity blueberry to tart cherry to really tart raisin pie to savory egg pie (what my daughters call quiche) to hearty mincemeat and steak and kidney pie.

To not like pie is to not like food!

Hooray for 5 years of P&P, I only wish Vince (the founder) was still around to see his restaurant thrive.

Screw the progressive hippie whiners, I <3 the Beef & Burgundy pie!!

@16, The crust makes the pie. Filling is just to give it context. The crust is like the rice in sushi -- deceptively bland-appearing, but it's really the driver of the whole experience. You can't have a decent pie without a decent crust, no matter what's inside.

I love me a fine thick crust.

And the smell of the meat is delicious.

I've never been there but I have always wonder about Pies & Pints. After these posts, I know that I have to go.

One big ol' beef pie and pint please!

Thanks for the heads up.

@4: Have you tried them recently? You're completely right, the filling-to-crust proportion was off when they first started a month or so ago, and the crust was dry. Improvements have been made—the High 5 people confirmed it. If not the pinnacle of pie greatness, they are quite good.

Fnarf - does "anal retentive" have a hyphen in it, or not?

Ah, you and your pies. We don't have a good pie place in Olympia. Sigh.

Their happy hour is glorious; best sweet potato fries ever and a bunch of other cheap goodies. Also the free pool in back is a boon when it's not packed. An excellent place to while away an alcohol-fueled afternoon.
