Elections Have Consequences

Stem cells...

President Obama today lifted restrictions on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research and called on Congress to provide further support for what he called a "promising" line of scientific inquiry under "strict guidelines," including a ban on human cloning.

Signing statements...

Calling into question the legitimacy of all the signing statements that former President George W. Bush used to challenge new laws, President Obama on Monday ordered executive officials to consult with Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. before relying on any of them to bypass a statute.

Iraq...

The U.S. will reduce its military presence in Iraq by 12,000 troops over the next six months as part of the first major drawdown since President Obama announced his plan to end combat operations in the country next year, U.S. military officials in Baghdad said Sunday.

His comments about cloning were a bit odd. It's the same ick factor that inspires people to oppose all kinds of things. There is nothing inherently immoral about cloning, though current techniques tend to lead to birth defects and have far to high an error rate.

If someone, at the point the technology is there, wants to reproduce via cloning, I am not sure the government should stop them. Anymore than we should insist on aborting at least one of each set of twins.

Stem Cell research-

Experimenting on the tiniest, most innocent and helpless members of the species would make Hubert Humphrey so proud:
"the moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped."

Finally help is on the way. So many people suffering now could benefit from stem cell research and have their lives improved. No matter what the insensitive right says about him, we the american people stand behind our President 100%.

Gosh, so much direct action from the guy who will have to convene a committee to look into this whole Gays In The Military thing.

I wish he could enact some executive order that would erase the last eight years from history.

7: Stupid much?

The "Gays In The Military thing" requires a consensus from the generals and an assessment of how it could affect troop morale in the battlefield.
Lifting the dumb band put by Bush on stem cell research doesn't because it's something that will be beneficial for the health of the public.

Now if we could just claw back the money "given" to former CEOs and CFOs who misstated earnings from CDOs (aka "LIES") ...

@10 - no it doesn't.

Commander in Chief Obama merely needs to give an order to the military and they need to follow it or resign.

It's that simple.

The military doesn't respect non-orders.

Dan,
I'm aware you're an Obama booster but it's important to note that Congress also holds the reigns on some restrictions on stem cell research. Also, the troop withdrawal is nothing new. The war is winding down in Iraq. It's something we knew about before the election. Finally, regarding using science. Fine let's use science to assist in determining policy. But beware that science may draw conclusions that seem or are politically incorrect. I couldn't help but notice in this morning's news that NYC is hosting a summit to present views that question global warming.

@13: But we need to not lose our top brass, and if he has to pretend he cares about their opinion so they'll maintain their positions, then let him pretend.

I'm happiest about the signing statements, myself. They're the most blatantly unconstitutional things I've ever seen.

You already posted that same exact post earlier. Come up with some new material please. Perhaps something that is a little less full of shit. Thank you.

13: You couldn't be more hopelessly wrong. Besides with the economic crisis left by the retard son of a Bush the last thing the President needs is to have the military debilitated by trying to accommodate some interest groups. To say that the President should waste his time and political capital during this moment of economic crisis on something so divisive as gays in the military is laughable.

@16 - why not, they're pretty much failures, aren't they?

Seriously, let's get real.

If they want to resign, he gets to appoint their replacements, which gets rid of a lot of political appointees in the military. And they're mostly fundie Christies, fwiw, so that's fine by me.

@18,

Now, now, at least #4 didn't blatantly lie this time, claiming that Humphrey specifically cited embryos in his concern for actual living children. That our friend (the mouth-breathing shit-for-brains) can't tell the difference between embryos and children is just something we're going to have to work on.

If you had read a bit more about that conference you'd realize it's put on by a group that not only supports deregulation of the market, but many of the participants now actually concede that humans probably contributed to global warming. Even large companies like Exxon Mobil have distanced themselves from the conference because "such companies no longer dispute that the greenhouse gases produced by burning fossil fuels pose risks".

Seems like they're losing prettty bad.

And on a side note, Obama lifting the ban on stem cell research was long overdue and great news to hear this morning. Sensible governance is a refreshing change.

@24 - true, but we used cassette DNA (cDNA) from Canada and the EU while Comrade Bush tried to burn down science in America.

Half of the time in Biochem and Genetics it seemed like we were just finding ways to run the tests in a different country, outsourcing US jobs to get the science done (if looked at wholescale).

This should make all you Stranger folks happy (esp. Schmader):

Another consequence: "US Attorney General Eric Holder's announcement that the federal government will no longer raid medical marijuana dispensaries was cheered by California dealers as well as state legislators, who seek to legalize and tax sales of the drug." (Wall Street Journal, 3/9/09, p. A6)
