Honest to God We Do Employ Straight Men at the Stranger

Posted by on Sun, Mar 8, 2009 at 4:02 PM

But it nevertheless falls to my gay ass to post this to Slog.

And then the Washington Huskies went out and finished the job of winning the Pac-10 title outright by beating Washington State 67-60 at Edmundson Pavilion, then used those scissors to commemorate the occasion by cutting down the nets.

It was the first outright title for the Huskies (24-7, 14-4) since 1953, and the first of any kind since 1985.

We miss you, Brad.

Do gay people not like the Huskies? Or is it sports? Just basketball maybe? Or do gay people not understand sports?

Eh, regardless, GO DAWGS!!!

If it makes you feel any better, my straight ass couldn't care less about sports, either. Well, team sports, mostly.

Ahh! March Madness is in the air. Nice to see the Huskies win the Pac-10 title. It is always a nice change when someone other than UCLA wins it all (nothing against UCLA). I don't really follow basketball, but the other half does.

If Constant is your idea of "straight," you've got a long way to go. "Straight" implies that they actually get laid from time to time. By women.

I have no idea what any of that meant. Seriously.

Come on, Dan, we have a Democratic president who is a huge college basketball fan and whose brother-in-law is the head hoops coach at Oregon State University. Gay or straight, it is the duty of all liberals to follow our man's lead. ObaMarch Madness!!!

I am happy for the Huskies, though unless they go far in the NCAA tiurnament, only a few will remember.

At least they, and the Storm, have been the sole bright spots in Seattle sports.

Think any of the Husky players will graduate? How much special tutoring do they get?

yes, because all straight people LOVE team sports.

nice cheap attempt at generalizing though.

I bet quite a few of them that get through 4 years do graduate. They're given a lot of help, but they need it. To accomplish being a top-level athlete along with maintaining the grades required is tough. And after what college sports have gone through with the exposure of so much "sweeping under the rug" by programs throughout the last two decades, the UW can't afford missteps. Alas, none will probably be a doctor or anything, but they'll definitely do something.

@10 Most of them will probably graduate. And you criticize them for getting tutoring? That's just odd.

@Seattle Times: Also odd, the first paragraphs of the linked Times article:

"The Washington Huskies were 20 minutes from history.

"One half of basketball from an accomplishment that could define their college careers forever."

I had to stop reading there, with images of scissors and half-basketballs, etc. I'll wait for Lisa Gangel to explain it to me.

What do you know, some pretentious hipster douchebags comment on a sports post to let everyone know just how hard they don't care. Please, tell us about how you don't own a TV next!

It is interesting that the Management at the Stranger even knows details of the private lives of their employees - it is none of their business. Period. Ever.

I have hired extensively and not once has the question ever been asked.

I'm still far more excited by us winning against the Ducks - first time in a quarter century.

But I guess you missed that.

Since my divorce, I guess I haven't been following sports much. But go, DAWGS, GO!! Congrats on winning the PAC-10.

to @12:

Actually, Hakeem Rollins from a years ago, a 6'7" center/forward was very successful academically (http://www.gohuskies.com/sports/m-baskbl…).

After he played his fourth year @ UW, he stayed on to complete his Biochemistry degree. A few of my friends had class with him; very intelligent individual. He was also a pretty darn decent basketball player on the 2004-2005 Nate Robinson/Sweet 16 team.

@10 They'll all graduate, Fnarf. I had classes with starters on the UW men's basketball team - they were never prepared and they only showed up half the time, but mysteriously they all passed.

21 -

Let me clarify, I only meant that this bunch probably won't become doctors or anything. It is true that every year some college athletes do make it big academically (and I could name several), but this year's Huskies probably won't. BUT, I'm not saying they're idiots. The reason they need help is because college athletes have a lot of obligations that take away from their classroom / office hours / study time.

I'm from out of town, but always root for the Cougs. Perhaps it's because my wife is from Pullman, and I mean- god, what the fuck else is there to do out there? Might as well let them win some shiny trophies, while the Dawgs go partake of art and good food and skiing and sailing and...
