Much to see tonight.
In the U District, Jack Hamann reads from On American Soil: How Justice Became a Casualty of WWII. This is about civil rights violations committed by the United States government, which of course only happened many many years ago and never happens anymore. Also, up in the U District, Adam Frank, who the press materials call "a scientist who respects religion," reads from The Constant Fire: Beyond the Science vs. Religion Debate.
In Wallingford, at Open Books, Dobby Gibson and Matt Hart will read. Gibson has written the line “No nation’s children will inherit more asphalt.”Hart has written a poem that begins “Once upon a time I was missing completely/and that time, once upon, was now."
And at Elliott Bay Book Company, Jerry Mander, who, it must be said, has an unfortunate name, reads from his book The Superferry Chronicles: Hawaii's Uprising Against Militarism, Commercialism and the Desecration of the Earth. There's all kinds of shit going down in Hawaii over this superferry, and most of us never hear a word about it. For that reason, this is the reading of the night.
The full readings calendar, including the next week or so, is here.
