"Dan White: Hero For Killing A Queer."

Posted by on Fri, Mar 6, 2009 at 9:29 AM

That was on a sign carried by a pro-Prop 8 protester outside yesterday's California Supreme Court hearing. I don't doubt that someone would wave a sign that said that—people wave signs that say "God Hates Fags," after all, and "Fag Matt [Shepard] in Hell"—but I'm curious if anyone got a picture.

I heard a rumor that homophobic people are really mean!

You know, if I had more time on my hands I'd grow my beard out, put on some padding to make myself look about 40 pounds heavier, get a baseball cap, and go to every pro-Prop 8 rally I read about in the newspapers, carrying a sign that said, "Dan White: Hero for Killing a Queer". And I'd make sure every reporter I saw got a picture of me.

If given the chance, they would hunt us down and kill us in the street like dogs... all the while screaming about how they're being oppressed.

Jesus must be SO proud.

What Judah said. These nuts only push the Great American Middle toward our side. Someone send some flowers to Phelps, he's probably converted more fence-sitters to pro-gay than most LGBT speakers yelling to the choir at rallies.

Who needs a fucking picture? I'm wondering if anyone had the guts to rip the sign out of his hands and beat the holy shit out of him with it. The ONLY reason someone like this gets away with it is because he thinks fags won't do anything about it.

@5 -- We are 'witch hunting' if we just boycott one store. What would the media say if we beat someone up?

Maybe most of us don't believe in vigilante justice.

March 12th is Equality Day here in WA. Throw your energy at our law makers and make a show in Olympia that you won't stand for being second class.

All these words and all this talk might feel good, but it gets little done. If you're interested in getting something done you're going to have to do more than just verbalize.

@6 agreed. Anyone want to guess how much fundraising mileage the Right got out of the video of that Anti-Prop-8 protestor stomping on the little old lady (Pro-Prop-8) counterprotestor's cross while the newscameras rolled? It gave their ludicrous "we're the oppressed" meme more steam than ever.

Sargon is right. There are two kinds of political action (and not necessarily mutually exclusive): that which feels good, and that which actually accomplishes the political goal. Choose the latter, and try to make it also do the former.

Mean spirited and showing it in public. Cute. I don't think things like this are helping them. Voting yes on Prop. 8 has all the scum pouring out of the sewers.

The picture of the guy with the sign was taken by me. Here is a link to my Photostream with some pictures of him: http://flickr.com/photos/jaysterdotcom/s…

Weird. I guess my eyes skipped to the quote itself "Dan White: Hero for Killing a Queer" and I took it to be a negative statement about Dan White. The context of your blurb set me straight, but it was one of those perspective-whiplash sensations when I realised what it was (apparently) intended to convey.

I guess I overestimate the irony content of things on a pretty regular basis.
