Lunchtime Quickie

Posted by on Thu, Mar 5, 2009 at 12:09 PM

I can't tell if this is one of those classic "feel-good" segments, or just absolutely sad. Man spends over $6000 a month on cat food and donuts for his 500+ cats at Caboodle RanchWhere Cats Aren't Treated Like Animals!

Do cats really need donuts and a Walmart?

Those kitties are so lucky. If it wasn't for this guy, they'd be in shelters on the way to being euthanized. Now they get to eat doughnuts!

I hear 6000 people have applied for the job as First Dog for the White House - free room and board plus access to the White House - better than most jobs.

The leap from 150 cats to 5,000 cats with their own compound (complete with security! It's like Kitty Waco!) isn't so hard to imagine, I guess. 150 cats = already crazy.

It's the jump from 1 cat to 150, glossed over in a sentence, that's really interesting.

Also: almost more disturbing is the existence of a Dateline/Inside Edition style "News magazing", with all the same trappings and style, devoted to pets and the extremists that love them. To an extreme degree.

With the right amount of animal training, this guy could totally be a super-villain.

God, I hope he spays and neuters them all. This is a sad case of hoarding, not a cat shelter.

My cat loves donuts, and acts pissy on any Saturday morning when they're not served.

Cats acting pissy = smell your socks before you put 'em on.

@5 I thought the same thing -- I googled and it looks like he does. Thankfully.

And @3 - I noticed that too... "1 cat had led to 150"... how the fuck does that happen?

@5 and @8 I'm glad it seems he's getting them fixed.

I wonder if they will eat him if he died there and no one knew about it for awhile?

i've never heard of "empty nest syndrome" leading to all-out insanity. is this common?

Hey, he's not on the dole and he's doing something he loves. And he's not out there preaching on street corners trying to make you believe.
As a cat owner/friend myself I'm delighted to see this exists. I've also worked at my local shelter where we were lucky enough not to have kill the extra cats that came our way.
A genteel insanity is not always a bad thing. It was the eccentric that lead to the scientific revolution sometimes called the enlightenment.

So what if he's a little odd. He's caring for animals other people couldn't/wouldn't care for, he's doing it out-of-pocket, and he's happy. More power to him.

This man is my new hero, and I'm making my own small donation today. I do worry about what'll happen when he dies, though....
