Norman Sigler, an executive recruiter whose web site professes, "I am not a professional politician," is running for mayor. Sigler, who moved to Seattle in 2004, previously sought the open city council seat that was ultimately filled by Sally Clark. Viability, obviously, will be an issue—as the huge crowd at the mayor's kickoff barbecue at the Central Area Senior Center this weekend made clear, Nickels has just about everyone with money and clout the city locked up—which is, of course, precisely why Council Member Tim Burgess decided to sit the race out this year. Meanwhile, fans of former city council member Peter Steinbrueck have formed a Facebook group called "Peter Steinbreuck, for the love of Seattle, RUN FOR MAYOR! If you're on Facebook, you can join the group—which currently has 41 members—here. And finally, rumor has it that there's a nascent movement to get People's Waterfront Coalition founder Cary Moon to run—not for mayor, but for state Speaker of the House Frank "Great Wall" Chopp's 43rd District seat.

Peter is a good guy, but he won't make a good mayor. It's a little surprising that no one else is making a serious run for the office, but even though the people who hate nickels really hate him, enough people like him that it makes running against him difficult.

I hear Frank is thinking of resigning rather than run against CM.

@1: A very adept summation of the situation.

@2: Wishful thinking. Cary could actually win a race for City Council and should consider that.

If Dan doesn't run, Peter better, or at least Nick.

But Mr. Seattle @3 said it better in terms of @2's wishful thinking.

She's a great person, and it is true that an LD seat is smaller than a Council or Mayoral seat in terms of how many doors one needs to knock on, but ... really?

That said, I'd rather have two Ds running for that seat under the Top Two ...

We should just get ready for 4 more years of lard ass in city hall.

But on the upside, he could have a heart attack, I mean look at him?!?

Is the mayor's son still in prison?

Erica, thanks for the FB group shout out! Woohoo! City Hall desperately needs a change in leadership, in both substance and style. We need a mayor who will be able to work with City Council and Olympia to get things done. We need a mayor who is forward thinking. We need a mayor who recognizes that Seattle has to make some fundamental changes if we're going to capitalize on our potential. I believe that Peter Steinbrueck is that person. And, if nothing else, we would have a decent civic conversation about the direction Seattle needs to move in. I'm horrified to see the lack of discourse right now. The mayor who gave snow removal efforts a "B"? The mayor who has been incredibly slow to acknowledge, let alone address, the increase in gang violence in the CD and south end that is, week by week, killing young men? No one with serious credibility is standing up against him? REALLY?

And @3 re: Cary Moon: oh yeah I'd be behind a city council run for her.

Peter should run. Democracy requires full debate to maintain itself.

Norman Sigler, has no experience in politics and in reguards to his community service he is known to support the local bars. Sigler known by few to be a closeted african american male who does not support his own community. Many known openly gay officials in the Northwest . None of them have heard of Norman Sigler.

What is he supposed to do has a sign that he is gay?! I don't see Sally Clark talking much about her being gay. and i don't think we need people who had experience in politics in 2009. all political ideas of the past failed miserably in the past 10 years. It's nice to mention it, but to make a campaign theme of it is a lil too much. He is a technical person based on his education and career, which I like. Gets to the point most of the time and gives constructive responses, except he lost me on his viaduct responses... no rebuild, no tunnel? ...so which is it? the surface?! hell no! I hope he is gay, because I want people like me to be at the leadership levels.
