War Pigs

Posted by on Fri, Feb 27, 2009 at 1:16 PM

In groups of dozens and (in a few southern states) even the low hundreds, Republicans turned out at noon today to throw "tea parties" to protest the stimulus bill. Wonkette has some hilarious coverage, including photos of a guy in a Poop hat and Michelle Malkin with her usual look of deranged outrage. On Malkin's own site, there are lots of reports of happy Republicans who are elated at their newfound ability to protest the President.

I’ve got tons of photos and e-mails pouring in from Tea Party people across the country. I joked to a Christian Science Monitor reporter covering the events that fiscal responsibility is the new counterculture...There is, as the old ’60s song goes, something happening here. And what it is, is very clear: A grass-roots revolt against the culture of entitlement. The spendzillas in Washington do not speak for us.

I hope this is the Summer of Fiscal Responsibility in the counterculture. I really want to go to the Fiscal Responsibility Woodstock. I bet it'll be in Alabama somewhere, and Kid Rock will totally fucking rock the shit out of that crowd.

Dear Michelle,

I just wanted to let you know that I attended the Atlanta Tea Party. I would say there were over 200 people who came out and stood in a driving rain to listen to the speakers, and make their voices heard! The inclimate weather was not enough to dampen the spirits of modern day patriots, or to quench their outrage over the Obamanation.

It's adorable watching these people learn about activism, now that something as petty as American soldier's lives or innocent Iraqi civilians aren't at stake.

Slog tipper Davey sent along a photo from Seattle's own tea party, in Westlake Center:

He says: "Appropriate accessories, no?" Davey, you are my Slog Tipping hero.

I wonder how many of them then marched over to sign up to fight in the Iraq War so our troops can come home faster while they die in their place?

... zero?

I have generally been ignoring the tea party thing, but OH MY GOD WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE. Do they not see that George W was one of the LEAST FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE PRESIDENTS WE'VE EVER HAD. Jesus Christ almighty.

Where the fuck were they in the past eight years? They could have staged a "take back the Republican Party" tea party, trying to re-instate fiscal conservatism as a core belief.

Instead of signs, those people will soon be carrying guns if clueless B. Hussein Obama doesn't get the message.

Stop socialism!
Stop tyranny!
Fight for freedom EVERYWHERE!

Sarah Palin for President!

Will in Seattle; War is for poor people and "ethnics" - weren't you paying attention? We really need to rally against the folks who are giving money to people who need it - wait, lemme board my private jet so I can tell you in person...

Seriously, I wish you'd ask these "outraged Amurkins" just exactly WHERE THE HELL they were for the past eight years, while shrub and his cronies spent this country into the largest deficit since the Great Depression.

Didn't seem like they were all that much concerned about "fiscal responsibility" when it was THEIR PARTY spending us INTO this mess, so really, I can't generate much in the way of sympath because NOW they're pissed that a DEMOCRAT has to spend us OUT of it.

I don't see this as a protest against money-spending. I see a bunch of whites who are jumping on the bandwagon to protest a 'black' president...

This is my take because my parents are these kind of people. I may be way off here but I could totally see them joining this tea party just for that reason. So sorry if I just interjected race into this where it may have not belonged (i noticed too many whites in the pics!).

@8 Actually, I too noticed the abundance of gray-haired white people in the Wonkette pictures. I'm not sure about your conclusion, but it certainly appears that these protests have attracted a particular demographic that we might expect to see at such an event.

yeesh, the sheer number of idiotic statements like 'your mortgage is not my problem' is disheartening. i'd like to see any one of these people find the time, resources and ingenuity to make a paper and marker sign without the entire US and global economy to prop them up.

By signing on as a US citizen, you're buying into a social contract; therefore, everyone's mortgage IS everyone else's problem on some level. As pissed as I am that a LOT of other people made bad decisions that affect my ability to be hired, you can't just be a fair weather taxpayer. That's how the security net system works.

Um, can they just say they hate black people and they hate it when poor people don't die of preventable diseases? That makes at least a little sense, unlike wanting a violent revolution to stop the government from taking $0.15 from them for volcano monitoring.

Why should the "whimpy men" (sic) be concerned about beoming your bitches come the Apocalypse? Are you "manly men" planning to forego female companionship at that point?

Sounds to me like somebody needs to come out of the closet.

Disagreement with the current administration does not necessarily imply support of the previous one. I for one have never supported our government spending like a sailor on shore leave.
Protesting is low brow and ineffective regardless of your political leaning, as is implying that someone is a racist because they don't agree with you.

Ummmm, per the republican "ideas of why god hates you and your ideals" isn't the fact it was raining and they had inclement weather some sort of sign that god(s) are not on their side?

Also, as my republican friend used to say "the only people who protest don't have jobs, aka democrats". So now that their lord and savior george "bankrupts everything he touches" bush left office it seems there are now enough jobless republicans to stage protests. Maybe that was his goal all along?

The idea that they are just drinking their own tea, that they bought, with their own money, is kind of silly when one is trying to compare the protest to The Boston Tea Party.

I love how they're all using this pretense of the Boston Tea Party, whose slogan, "No Taxation Without Representation", is totally apt to the stimulus package, which actually has $300+ billion in tax cuts and no tax increases, against which all of their democratically elected Republican representatives got the chance to vote.

Apt analogy there, guys. Excellent reasoning skills.

There once was a musical troupe
A pickin' singin' folk group
They sang the mountain ballads
And the folk songs of our land

They were long on musical ability
Folks thought they would go far
But political incompatibility led to their downfall

Well, the one on the right was on the left
And the one in the middle was on the right
And the one on the left was in the middle
And the guy in the rear was a Methodist

This musical aggregation toured the entire nation
Singing the traditional ballads
And the folk songs of our land
They performed with great virtuosity
And soon they were the rage
But political animosity prevailed upon the stage

Well, the one on the right was on the left
And the one in the middle was on the right
And the one on the left was in the middle
And the guy in the rear burned his driver's license

Well the curtain had ascended
A hush fell on the crowd
As thousands there were gathered to hear The folk songs of our land
But they took their politics seriously
And that night at the concert hall
As the audience watched deliriously
They had a free-for-all

Well, the one on the right was on the bottom
And the one in the middle was on the top
And the one on the left got a broken arm
And the guy in the rear, said, "Oh dear"

Now this should be a lesson if you plan to start a folk group
Don't go mixin' politics with the folk songs of our land
Just work on harmony and diction
Play your banjo well
And if you have political convictions keep them to yourself

Now, the one on the left works in a bank
And the one in the middle drives a truck
The one on the right's an all-night deejay
And the guy in the rear got drafted
More...

i was surprised to see that no commented on the remarkable racism in this photo on wonkette via the link:

almost as clever as the easter watermelon hunt.

i an flabbergasted that not-even-thinly-veiled racism has entered legitimate political discourse on such a wide scale.. so, will people be carrying signs that say things like 'remove the apartheid wall, use the concrete to build more gas chambers' at the next palestinian solidarity rally? is that okay now? wtf?

Let's be perfectly clear.

Under President Obama, 95 percent of American citizens get a TAX CUT.

Under President Obama, the top tax rate for rich and ultra-rich people is the SAME as under President Reagan.

Don't like it?

Then move to somewhere else. You'll still pay US taxes though.
