The Rodham

Hillary loves her some Hamas.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is now hammering Israel over its treatment of Palestinians in Gaza.

As First Lady, Clinton raised eyebrows when she kissed Suha Arafat.

Since she was then seeking a Senate seat the resulting brouhaha caused her to "re-think" her positions.

"I'm a very strong supporter of Israel," Clinton said back in February 2000.

On Thursday, as Secretary of State she had yet another about face in the form of angry messages demanding Israelis speed up aid to Gaza. Jewish leaders are furious.

Some Israelis are already longing for the Bush years.

"I feel it's unfortunate that they don't continue the policy of the Bush administration, which was much more pro-Israel," said Akiva Homnick of Jerusalem.
It's a hard times for hardliners.

israel is going to have to suck it up. they'll have to settle for 99.99% of what they want rather than the 100% bush gave them.

Dear Israel: You want our support? Don't crush ambulances with tanks. Simple.

Equating support for the Israeli hard right's Zionist suicide mission with being pro-Israel is a bit like equating support for George W. Bush's diligent efforts to bankrupt the USA with being pro-America.

Same for a phrase like "Jewish leaders are furious." Sorry, but Jewish opinion in Israel or America is far from monolithic.

An American Jew

@4:

I don't know, man. The war in Gaza enjoyed wide support from Israelis. Not to mention all the people that marched in Seattle. WTF?

I find it hilarious that many of Seattle's Jews are the most liberal people around, yet when the subject of Israel comes up, they become Neo-Cons.

@1 yeah, that took me by surprise. She looks sexy in that picture. I've always (mostly) liked HRC, and I always hated headscarfs, but...man Hill in that headscarf is hot.

I'll be in my bunk.

The Democratic Party will regret not nominating the pretty lady.

The more we ignore the Middle East and stop listening to the whining from all sides, the more they'll have to solve their own problems.

This was the lead story on Drudge over 24 hours ago. That's some snappy blogging Charles!

On the positive side, this may be the first post I've seen from you that doesn't include a rhetorical question.

Supporting Israel has nothing to do with supporting the hawikish rightwingers in Israel. One supports Israel best by working toward peace, and putting rightwing Israelis and Hamas alike on notice that they have to do some of that work, too, is not an "anti-Israel" position.

@5

That's because the people who around the world are for democracy and the rule of law support theocratic Muslim regime that has nothing to do with democracy and would kill every Jew if only they could. That's what Hamas is. That's what Hamas stands for. And that's in the end what Hillary is providing support for in Gaza.

@13: People always think it's got to be an either-or deal; but that's far too simplistic - there is plenty of moral culpability to go around. Hamas equips suicide bombers who blow up pizza places and discos, the Israeli military bombs apartment buildings and hospitals, the US sends Israel money and weapons, Iran sends Hezbollah money and weapons, Egypt does fuck-all for either the Palestinians or the Israelis, Saudi Arabia sets up schools to teach their batshit-crazy brand of Islam, Jordan refuses to take in refugees, Syria destabilizes Lebanon, etc. etc. etc. The whole region is fucked.

There are no winners in the Middle East, only losers.
