The Culture War Is Alive and Well and Being Waged From An Apartment in Lynnwood

Posted by Dan Savage on Tue, Feb 24, 2009 at 4:39 PM

Several members of the Washington state Senate received a 30+ page "report" today from an organization—an organization based in an apartment in Lynnwood—that calls itself "United We Stand Washington." From the cover letter...

Dear Senator:

Senator Ed Murray recently stated: "Instead of the cultural wars that we have seen here year after year, we see a Legislature that is mostly on board in moving forward on protecting all Washington's families."

Unfortunately a liberal media and a well funded campaign have stacked the odds heavily in favor of the homosexual agenda and against traditional families and values.

Robert Crowe, the author of the letter and, presumably, the report, argues that homosexuality is not enough like race—homosexuality is not immutable—and too little like religion—religion may be mutable but is also Constitutional (?)—for homosexuals to be a protected class under civil rights laws. And, hey, let's all try to remember that discrimination isn't necessarily a bad thing, since all it really means is "to make a distinction," so... um...

The question for public policy is: which forms of "discrimination" are so profoundly offensive to the national conscience that they justify government action that interferes with the rights of employers and other private entities and gives special protections to certain classes of people?

United We Stand Washington, a.k.a. Robert Crowe, is a bit late with this argument. Someone needs to let him know that the state passed a gay rights law that bars discrimination against gays and lesbians (and straights! and bisexuals!) in employment, housing, services, and credit several years ago; that RSVP cruise ship has sailed, Mr. Crowe. What's moving through the legislature this session is a third and final domestic partnership law; that's the law Murray was referring to with his culture war comments. The latest domestic partnership bill would grant to gay couples all the remaining rights of marriage that the state controls. While Washington state may soon stop discriminating between gay and straight couples where a whole bunch of rights and responsibilities are concerned, the DP bill doesn't require much from employers or other private entities. But the fine points of legislative process aren't what really concerns Mr. Crowe:

Is "sexual orientation," like race and sex, a characteristic that is inborn, involuntary, immutable, innocuous, and in the Constitution? Is it, like religion (which is not inborn, involuntary, immutable, or necessarily innocuous, but is in the Constitution), a characteristic that meets even one of these criteria? [Actually, yes—it meets almost all of these criteria. And freedom of religion is guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution, but not freedom from discrimination based on religion. But we banned that anyway.]

The only truthful answer is no. [Wrong.]

Behind the homosexual movement are radical Talmudic Jews with unlimited resources. The following report describes how these Jews are destroying America. [Oh...]

Sincerely,

Robert Crowe,
United We Stand
Washington

And here's a taste from the table of contents for the report that follows:

INTRODUCTION: HOW THE JEWS ARE DESTROYING AMERICA
UNMASKING THE HOMOSEXUAL AGENDA
THE RADICAL HOMOSEXUAL MOVEMENT IS RUN BY JEWS
JEWS CONTROL THE PORNOGRAPHY INDUSTRY
THE JEWISH ABORTION INDUSTRY
THE JEWISH SLAVE TRADE (PROSTITUTION)

Well, gee. That last paragraph of the cover letter would explain why Mr. Crowe described religion as not "necessarily innocuous." Mr. Crowe clearly believes that some religions are way more nocuous than others. Should've seen that coming; United We Stand is described at the top of the cover letter as "DEDICATED TO THE PRESERVATION OF A WHITE ANGLO-SAXON CATHOLIC/PROTESTANT AMERICA." Dedicated to a white America, sure, but totally down with laws that protect racial minorities from discrimination because, like, race is inborn, involuntary, immutable, and innocuous. All things being equal, of course, Mr. Crowe would like to preserve white America. Nothing personal all you innocuous but involuntarily black folks.

UPDATE: I called Robert Crowe at his apartment in Lynnwood a moment ago. An answering machine picked up and the outgoing message said I had reached the offices of "Catholics and Protestants United." I began to leave a message and Mr. Crowe picked up. I asked him what he hoped to accomplish with his report.

"What I hope to accomplish with it is this: You can’t equate civil rights and extra-constitutional rights. Did you read the letter? Did you? Do you understand the difference? When you take away the rights from one group you give them to another! That’s what you’re doing!"

At this point Mr. Crowe began to shout, his voice breaking.

"This is a war against traditional morality! Against the family! Oh my God! I can’t even talk to you! My God! You have no idea what you’re doing! You’re destroying this country!"

And then he hung up—before I could ask him about the role of the Jews. For which I blame the Jews.

UPDATE 2: Slog reader Andrew thinks the international gay/Jewish conspiracy needs a logo, so he created this one...

Thanks, Andrew!

@17, he might be, or maybe he just was surrounded by that attitude growing up, so it all seems completely normal to him.

I moved to a small city in a rural area and a lot of the crap I've heard people say makes me think they ought to be committed. What sounds like paranoid schizophrenia against one backdrop is a societal norm against another.

Although Lynnwood isn't the typical breeding ground for these sorts of ideas, he might have come from elsewhere or have been part of a tight, ignorant family with likeminded friends.

Or he might need meds. It's hard to tell. I've heard sane people spout insane drivel enough times I can never be sure.

'Is "sexual orientation," like race and sex, a characteristic that is inborn, involuntary, immutable, innocuous, and in the Constitution?' -
Did anybody put this question to any straight people? Heterosexuality can just as easily be considered to be a 'learned' behavior. And is sex/gender really immutable any more? Was it ever?

I mean most educated adults will call bull shit and not take this idiot seriously in the slightest, but there are always some fools that will believe and teach his hate speech to younger generations. Of course he has his freedom of speech, that is fine, but the worst part is waiting to see if someone gets physical with Jews or gays (or gay jews!) due to his bigoted propaganda. How disturbing.

First, remember that discrimination, in the big picture, is usually a good thing (there are exceptions such race, ethnicity, religion, age, etc.).

Second, "The Gay Agenda", embraced by the liberal media, is very easy to spot and define. Although I don't have the actual written agenda, it can easily be summarized as follows:

The U.S. Government and citizens of the world should treat all people (even homosexuals!) equally unless that person's actions harms another innocent party. Religious beliefs should not be taken into account when assessing "harm."

GAY AGENDA!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA
HHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

Sorry I just had to get that out. Here I am a gay Jew having to split my time between Zionist conquest and the homosexual agenda to destroy America, and all of a sudden I discover that I don't have to be splitting my time at all!

This report is such a relief. After seeing the excellent documentary "Trembling before G-D" I was under the impression that Jews could be just as homophobic as members of other religions. The documentary even showed gay Jews who had been disowned by their families and cast out of their communities. Thank goodness this was all apparently just a ruse! I guess this also means that the riots and violence that broke out in Jerusalem when the first gay pride march in the city was announced were also a sham. Whew!

And here in Boston one of the most vocal opponents against gay rights is Jewish, though perhaps he's not a "Talmudic Jew." Or maybe just maybe, he's trying to bring the Bay State anti-gay movement down FROM THE INSIDE!

This report has made me feel so much better!

The beautiful thing about this country is that you don't have to deserve your civil rights. Pretty much as long as you're not gay, the law protects you. HOWEVER, getting civil rights is a different matter, and that's entirely about PR, which is why, for all his crazy, you have to hand this to Crowe (who must live a very stressful life given how the little Mary seems to have burst into tears at the thought of picking up a phone call from Dan): he has crystallized perfectly the criteria that make for a sympathic civil rights PR pitch. He lists five (mostly overlapping) criteria: traits must be inborn, involuntary, immutable, innocuous, and in the Constitution to get good press. We're clearly the first four, and, with education and conversations and open and healthy lives, we can (and will) prove that to all but the deafest and most spiteful members of the American Family Association. Furthermore, I would posit that, as citizens of this country, we too are in the Constitution. Is Mr. Crowe aware of how race makes it into the Constitution? Well, it declares slaves 3/5 of a person, for instance. If, in less than two-hundred years, that can evolve into the Civil Rights Act, I'm pretty sure that we, as citizens like any other and thus as people in the Constitution and thus as those deserving of the rights promised to us, can (and will) parlay that into marriage.

Hmmm, he is definitely a nut case. And it used to be we never worried too much about fringe nutcases but the internet has changed all that.

However, I dislike the logo design, no matter how tongue in cheek or sarcastic it may be. Reason? Because you know, somewhere down the road someone will get a hold of it, and believe it is real, and use it as "proof" that such a conspiracy exists. No matter that it is a joke...after all The Protocols of the Elders of Zion was complete hoax and yet look how many people actually believe it is truth!!

@53, I dunno, I think it's like when folks get all wound up over Onion articles they believe to be factual. Remember when a number of conservative Christians mass-forwarded the satirical article about Harry Potter and children's Satanic cults? It was thoroughly debunked in a relatively short time and they just ended up looking silly over it. Perhaps occasionally being tricked by your own hysterical tendencies will help people realize they're being ridiculous.

Those too dense for that dig up "evidence" everywhere, and one more bit won't make much of a difference.

If someone were susceptible to this outlandish scenario, they weren't important in this debate in the first place, and they will continue to marginalize themselves through ridiculousness.
