Obama's Addresses to Congress

Posted by Eli Sanders on Tue, Feb 24, 2009 at 6:02 PM

Live feed here (among other places). "Optimistic" advance excerpts here.

UPDATE: Savage here. "I hope someone there is noting down how many/which pandering fuckwits are sitting thru Obama's speech on their crackberries," writes a Slog tipper. I couldn't tell you—I'm listening to Obama's speech on the radio while I bake oatmeal raisin cookies for the boys. Anybody watching on TV care to name names?

UPDATE 2: Speech over. And for the record: the "analysts" on the cable news programs get all the grief—on The Daily Show, on the liberal blogs—but the analysts on NPR are morons too.

UPDATE 3: Bobby Jindal is speaking to us like we're all completely retarded. That may work in Louisiana where, um, most everyone is nearly or completely retarded. But he's speaking to a national audience tonight. He's for tax cuts, against regulations and gov'mint burryocats, blah blah blah. "Americans can do anything," he keeps telling us. Uh-huh.

The year was 2004.

Life was simpler then...ah, remember how clearly all the lines were drawn.

For example, could this debate, featuring John Kerry debating "Ricky Retardo" have ever taken place in 2009?!?! Read on, and wax nostalgic...:

Brilliant speech; return to responsibility theme continues, but now is aimed at GOP, bad banks, etc.

He's doing well at weaving it all together, explaining things in simple terms. Like health care costs weigh down our economy (more understandable than an idiolog. argument that it is a right, etc.).

He was for charter schools, btw, and his talking about personal responsibility to stay in school or you're letting yourself down and your nation down -- brilliant.

How could anyone have voted for this putz? Jindal sounds like he's auditioning for a spot on School House Rock.

Or why we don't need to worry about volcanoes. Maybe we should also cut funding for hurricane monitoring and response, too.

I want it known that I didn't vote for Jindal. I hate listening to him make speeches. He always sounds like he is condescending to his audience. Of course, he pretty much thinks he is smarter than everyone else, which is why no one in this state with any kind of education voted for him. It's offensive that he treats his constituents like children.

@Update 3 - Near the beginning, Jindal had the balls to pull this one out: "The government is asking us to trust them in a time of crisis... after hurricane Katrina, we here in Louisiana have a reason not to trust such a statement." The guy tried redirecting a slag against Bush's administration to talk shit about Obama? Amazing. Did anybody else notice this?

Are those sold on-line?
Posted by John Galt on February 24, 2009 at 7:41 PM

@36 - Yep. He's been trying to deflect blame for Katrina from the Republicans by talking about how effective the response to Gustav and Ike were, and indirectly taking the credit. And while those responses were better, they still weren't good. It doesn't surprise me that he will try to turn that whole mess into a statement about not trusting the Obama administration.
Posted by Sheryl on February 24, 2009 at 7:44 PM

@36: Duh! Don't you know the next hurricane will be Obama's fault? Jindal can predict the future: he asked King Friday and Lady Elaine to tell him about 2012.

@40 but we can blame the next volcano death on Jindal's Pro-Volcano death position. So its a wash politically. Too bad we are the ones who die.

And by the way, I take offense to Update 3 on the original post. I'm not a Louisiana native, but I know a lot of people who are who are among the smartest people I have ever met.

There are a lot of people here who are very disenchanted with Jindal. He is losing the far right because they think he isn't conservative enough. He never had the left at all, and he is losing the moderates because they are starting to realize that he isn't as bipartisan and competant as he painted himself in his campaign. He may face a real threat in the 2011 gubenatorial election - assuming the Democrats can get things together by then.

@43,

Here's a little grammar tip. Only put a comma after an adjective if you're using more than one: you naive, ignorant cunt. Do not put a comma between the adjective and the noun.

Thanks.

Seriously, I'm hoping for a Palin-Jindal ticket in 2012. Then the GOP finally collapses under the weight of its own stupid and a party with actual ideas takes its place as the opposition.

@47 - When your state really is a national joke, you watch you legislature cut spending for public education, and you watch a bill to allow intelligent design to be taught in public schools, you get a litle sensitive. The smart, practical people here aren't running for public office, because enacting true reform in this state is an exercise in futlity.

@49: I hear you. Obama's comments on the campaign trail about guns and religion - while they were a political gaffe - were pretty insightful. In really depressed areas, it's very easy to get elected on issues that get people's blood up but that don't really make things better for anyone. I have a feeling that Jindal is one of those people.

And no, I don't think that means that electorate is stupid, it's just that a lot of the more sensible issues get sacrificed to apathy. "The best lack all conviction, and the worst are full of passionate intensity." Etc.

Okay, please excuse the following random memory:

~7 years ago, I was living in Hyde Park in Chicago. Obama was my district's representative in the Illinois legislature. The first time I saw him, he was being interviewed on Chicago's PBS affiliate and deflecting questions about being a southside radical. (Keep in mind that a former Black Panther represents this same district in the U.S. House)

Anyway, I have no real point here other than to say that I simply cannot believe that Barack Obama went from being a near nobody in my neighborhood to POTUS in less than seven years.

"That may work in Louisiana where, um, most everyone is nearly or completely retarded. "

Yes there is a noticeable prejudice amongst smug Northerners, the kind who love the smell of their own farts, and this chauvinism is particularly strong in Seattleites.

We, the rest of the country get it. You, in Seattle, are smug ass holes, some of the time.

The post would be improved by removing this gratuitous slur. And if you don't, sir, meet me in City Park at dawn with your pistols and your second. . . .
