You Gotta Give 'Em Hope

Posted by on Mon, Feb 23, 2009 at 8:57 AM

And Dustin Lance Black did just that during his acceptance speech last night...

A little heavy on the God talk for my tastes, but very, very moving nevertheless. Black won the Academy Award for his screenplay for Milk.

I thought it was as close to the perfect acceptance speech as I'd ever heard.

all you gays are wonderful, beautiful creatures and god loves you.

This speech was lovely. The first few speeches were quite nice.

Oh, @3. His point was to let those kids who are told they're not good by their parents, churches, and governments know that they are just as valuable as everyone else. Nothing more, nothing less.

Cheers.

@2,3

I hope you can find something human to hold on to in all that darkness.

He was so eloquent when speaking to those kids. It was one of the best moments of the night.

Another beautiful gay Morman. I feel like Gay Mormons are the poster boys for Religous Rejection.

The importance of a speech like that viewed by tens of millions of people should not be over estimated. Sometimes all that it takes is one positive statement to validate some lesbain or gay young person who may have nerver received validation. If this speech can enable even a few to challenge homophobic messages from parents or churches then it was well worth the effort.

i grew up in mississippi and tennessee, and can speak first hand about the way that a religious upbringing, even if you're not religious yourself, can dramatically impede one's ability to own up to things like homosexuality.

religions operate on fear. eventually, you realize that. but being reassured that "god does love you for who you are" is not something that happens often in these environments when what you are is not what they tell you to be.

The gay movement has for good reasons severed ties with organized religion, which is why god-heavy statements like this seem so jarring. But for kids who are raised in religious environments, that message is a tremendously important one to hear. For that, I thought this was particularly moving.

** to all you gays out there, you are just like the rest of us. **

Ultimately, that's the message we want to get out there!

If God loves any one of us (the collectively human 'us'), then he loves us all.

I'd like to hope for even more - that God loves all his (or her) creation.

I didn't watch the AA; figured what I wanted to see would make it to youtube. This fantastic acceptance speech was one of those moments.

Heavy on the God talk? All I heard was "God loves you". One sentence out of many. Don't be so God-paranoid. God ain't the problem...it's her interpretors who muck it up.
