The Oscar Countdown Begins

Posted by on Fri, Feb 20, 2009 at 10:24 AM

As I hope you are by now aware, this Sunday brings the broadcast of the 476th Academy Awards, and Lindy West and I will be live-Slogging the shit out of it.

As I mentioned yesterday, the only race I'm legitimately invested in is Best Actor. (Lending credence to my argument that The Wrestler is not a triumph of acting but a staged documentary about the astounding things Mickey Rourke's willing to do on camera: The man who played The Wrestler's steroids dealer has been arrested for allegedly dealing steroids. And this whole argument about the acting styles of Penn and Rourke is very well laid out by the San Francisco Chronicle's Mick LaSalle.)

But for many other people, the race of fascination is Best Supporting Actor, due to the very, very likely winner being very, very dead.

Who do you hope shows up to accept Heath Ledger's Best Supporting
Actor Oscar?

Personally, I'd much rather Andy Kaufman came back from the dead.

What about Black Gallagher, bitches?

If Heath Ledger came back from the dead, it would be a way more impressive stunt than Joaquin Phoenix's hip hop album.

Doesn't Heath have any actual family who could accept the award? Parents?

He has a daughter.

David,

If you are trying to be cute.. you are just coming off as a Jackass.

As the above poster mentioned, he has a daughter, has a family, as well as a respectable body of work, he man deserves some respect.

Didn't Heath Ledger have just as much screen time, if not more, than Christian Bale? Why is he a "supporting" actor?

ugh. i hope he loses. and i don't even care about these awards, but i think it's excruciatingly lame that they would give an oscar to someone based almost entirely upon his untimely death. i doubt he would have even been nominated, let alone win, if he were still alive. but what the hell do i know.

I will continue to pull for Rourke. Even if what we were privy to was a documentary on said willingness, that willingness alone shows a surplus of what accounts for a rather large percentage, IMO, of good acting (particularly good screen acting). The totality of that performance had me sobbing in my seat through the entirety of the credits.

Nothing against Penn, who was brilliant (and whose winning the award would be a triumph of artistic substance in any year that he wasn't up against Rourke).

Oh, and I'd go with Jake Gyllenhaal. But then, I've had a big crush on Jake since Donnie Darko.

oh, and gallagher FTW. but only if he uses the oscar to smash a watermelon.

Making Penn seem like a human being, never mind a loveable one, should at least get Milk's special effects crew an Oscar

@11,
It's not just because he died -- don't forget they also had to make up for not giving him an Oscar he actually deserved (best actor for Brokeback Mountain) when they had the chance.

I'd like Jake Gyllenhaal. Or Maggie.

What were we talking about?

Am I the only person who thinks that if Heath was still alive he NEVER would have even been nominated?

@14 Oh come on. Show the man some respect. His career has survived Madonna's pussy. That should earn him some respect. We all know that's how he won the Mystic River 2004 Oscar.

@21, Thanks, I'm thinking the only reason all the gay guys like Heath is because he played a TOP in Brokeback Mountain. Had he been the bottom and died, no one would care....

11 & 17, Did you actually watch the movie? I did. I actually thought the movie as a whole was a bit overrated; a decent batman movie, but not great. But Ledger's performance was fantastic. He was the best part of the movie, completely stole the show whenever he was on screen. He totally deserves the award, whether he had died or not.

Yes, #25, I did see the movie. And it was not Oscar worthy. It was okay but not worth an award.

wtf why isn't his family on the list?

and

i'm confused by his relationship with williams at the time of his death. where they together or not? sure, she is the mother of his child, but were they together?

some fine fan could prolly clear this up for me.

and
his acting totally rocked.

YAY! we made movies now lets make an award to give to each other for making movies!
Posted by WHO CARES on February 20, 2009 at 3:29 PM

@27: No, he and Michelle weren't together when he died, so having her accept the award would be strange.

Regarding his daughter, Heath valued his privacy and his daughter Mathilda's privacy very highly, and since she's too young to make that sort of decision herself, trotting her out on stage would be pretty disrespectful and exploitative.

Jake is Matilda's godfather - if that makes any difference. But probably Chris Nolan will do the honors like he did at the Globs. Look for "The Class" to overtake "Waltz With Bashir". And will anybody mispronounce the emcee's name as "Huge Ackman"? U-Hurd-It-Hear.
