Police Arrest Man Caught Masturbating Outside of Elementary School

Posted by on Tue, Feb 17, 2009 at 6:11 PM

On Monday, Seattle police arrested a 40-year-old Shoreline man in front of Whittier Elementary in Crown Hill after officers caught the man masturbating in his truck outside of the school.

According to a police report, officers found the man sitting alone in his truck, completely naked with "various pornographic material" next to him on the seat. "On the dashboard was a bottle of KY lubricant," the report says. "There were approximately 10 children...in view as [he] masturbated."

The man told police he was not interested in children but, the report says, "gave no valid excuse" as to his reason for parking in front of the school and masturbating.

Although Whittier students are out of school on mid-winter break, the school is also home to a childcare program.

Police released the 40-year-old man to his mother and are requesting indecent exposure charges.

Whittier seems to be attracting the wrong kind of people.

In December, the Whittier PTA sent out a warning to parents after a registered sex offender—also driving a red pickup truck—was spotted near the school.

In 2007, former Whittier principal Alex Coberly was also charged with indecent exposure after, police say, Coberly exposed himself to several strangers while driving around Seattle. His case was deferred.

So Coberly came back? What a tool.

So to speak.

I predict "Go away! 'Baitin'!" has a bright and shiny future on SLOG.

What exactly would have been a 'valid reason'?

I remember getting notes from my elementary school as a kid when such "predators" would start lurking around. Usually happened every couple of years. Schools attract weirdos.

Karlheinz - Is it mutually exclusive, either you worry about the economy failing or you arrest creeps masturbating outside schools?

And, which school do you generally masturbate near, so I can avoid?

This is not the Whittier Way. I don't think.

Good moms don't let their 40-year-old sons out of the house naked and toting stacks of pornography. That's just common sense.

In 7 or 8 days, I expect to be reading a story about this and remembering this slog post.

Valid excuse? He lives with his mom.

Could you imagine having a son like that? Jesus. I'd say kick him out, but he's probably much more of a threat to the community if homeless than living in his mom's house.

His mom probably just didn't want him masturbating at home. He splatters the crysanthenums.

So is it the same dude they sent the note home about? Or is this a totally different perv in a pickup?

This is a totally different guy. first guy is about 48, lives in lynnwood. this guy is 40, lives in Shoreline. Great news knowing there have been TWO pervs in 3 months.

Why not have a mandatory increased fine/sentencing for this kind of behavior within 500 feet of schools, much like the way they do it for drugs? (not that I agree with the drug laws, but I like the idea of stiffer charges and sentencing for naked masturbation inside a school zone. any kids sees that is going to be horribly damaged, and the proximity to kids makes it very easy for a pedophile to move to the next step, which would be real kids)

Whittier IS attracting the wrong people, and we are a dumping ground for one very incompetent teacher. This teacher hit a student with full-force and was there the next day still teaching. This teacher has been verbally abusive for years.
WHY IS HE STILL ALLOWED CONTACT WITH OUR CHILDREN?

Who is the teacher that hit a student? What does he teach?

I agree there should be higher sentencing if someone does this by a school. Probably should look it up....

This article is inaccurate. I just spoke with the detective in charge of this investigation. This incident occurred on Sunday, 2/15 around 5 pm, not on President's Day. A neighbor called the police to report a suspicious vehicle but did not observe his behavior. He was not arrested. Police cannot press charges against him unless he was seen naked by a civilian (not a police officer) and that civilian was shocked or alarmed. Did any civilians see this man? If so, please call Detective Tony Stevenson at Seattle Police at 206-684-5576 or e-mail anthony.stevenson@seattle.gov with information. As it stands right now, there is no case against this person.
