Tomorrow Is No Dick Day on Slog

All day tomorrow, our elite squad of dick-deleters will be deleting dicks from the comments on Slog to provide you with a dick-free commenting environment.

If you ordinarily don't comment on Slog, or if assholes with mysterious, ridiculous grudges have driven you away from commenting, I hope you'll join in on Monday. Let your non-dickish voice be heard! If you don't normally comment and you need examples, you can study the work of commenters Balt-o-Matt, Julie in Eugene, Gurldoggie (who also has a great blog I love to read), and kid icarus, as well as the regular crew—Joh, NaFun, Scary Tyler Moore, Abby, W7ngman, Aislinn, and many more.

You kind of forget about all the great commenters we have here on Slog, sometimes, with all the dicks rattling around. That's why we're chopping the dicks off at the root on Monday.

I find a little dickish humor refreshing, as long as it isn't a personal attack.

Consider me warned!

In my opinion you can also follow the example of Big Sven, and Fifty-Two-Forty for good commenting skills.

I don't really post that much in the comments. Not just because of the dicks but because I prefer a conversation among peers over the format of "real writers" posting and "readers" posting witty retorts mixed with snarkey non-sequitors.

But I won't be posting Monday because I don't want to verify that you were talking about me.

This would seem to imply "dick" is a bad thing. Much as your editor, Mr. Savage, has endeavored on his SavageLove podcast to avoid using the word "cunt" to mean something awful, perhaps equal dispensation should be afforded this pejorative for the penis?

I don't get this at all.

All of these problems have been addressed with technologies that attach qualitative measures to persistant user IDs.

The SLOG allows anonymous posts in response to inflammatory articles; and then is shocked! SHOCKED! when the conversation turns sour?

And now "No Dick Day"?

I guess the thinking here is "why fix it when you can just complain loudly and increase your pageviews?"

Paul Constant is amazing. His contributions to the Slog are huge, so @18, you may suck whatever dick is handy.

I haven't been commenting much lately for a lot of reasons, mostly not to do with the Slog. But it has been ugly around these parts lately, and the absence of Poe is a huge drag. Non gave it up this week, and that's a great loss too. I admire those like Big Sven and Balt-0-Matt, who persevere with good humor. I have a bit of trouble doing that myself, so I've been staying out of the fray. I nearly decided this week to give it up for good, but am feeling a bit softer about it now. (I'd miss Catalina too much.)

Good luck tomorrow. It will be interesting to see what happens. I'll be fitting a suit I'm making (grey wool crepe, with a lavender silk blouse) but will check in to see who's standing!

I'm looking forward to this. I have the day off, and since we spent all weekend exploring Bellingham and appreciating natural beauty, I don't feel guilty spending a day inside, slogging-it-up old school.

That said, I'm trying not to get my hopes up too high for a return to Slog's yesteryear. There are a lot more people now, and one can never underestimate some semi-anonymous fucktard's drive to ruin things for everyone else.

Is it wrong that I thought the Chelsea Alvarez-Bell thing (@27) was hilarious? Poe was brutal, yes, but he was brutal in holding out for a higher caliber of posting. I wouldn't have said it the way he did, but anyone who gets their names on the byline should be ready for some grief. People have *always* been far worse to ECB and Charles, and they don't go run off in a snit.

When I was about nine, I had recently gotten a Nintendo Entertainment System from a garage sale down the road, the first gaming system I ever had. One game that I bought was Super Mario Brothers 3, the final chapter of the widely-acclaimed SMB trilogy, which like in the original Super Mario Brothers consisted of Mario/Luigi chasing after Princess Toadstool (whose name has since been bastardized to 'Peach'). Back on topic though; I popped in the game in my new NES and pressed Start. I started at World 1, of course, and began playing. During this, I got used to the controls, map, and all that jazz. After all, it IS supposed to be kinda like a tutorial level. So I had advanced to World 2, "Desert Land" and I was moving along rather smoothly. In the back of my mind, I knew that at some point the levels would start to get more difficult. I soon noticed a tile, one unlike the other tiles (Toad houses, numbered tiles, etc). It appeared to be some cross-hybrid of flowing diarrhea and sand, which caught my attention. I navigated my way to the tile, and hit the A button and was warped to what appeared to be a normal level; there even was a happy sunshine in the top left corner! As I side-scrolled my way through the level, the fucking sun decided to go apeshit and sodomize me repeatedly until I finally broke down in tears, throwing my controller at the ground screaming for my mom. That fucking bastard.

If they require registration to post, The Stranger knows that their counts will drop and they won't be abl to beat their chests about how much traffic SLOG gets...they care about traffic/posts (and hooker ads), not "quality" (however you may want to define it)...

So here is my question -- would this be considered a "dick" comment? Snarky maybe, but to me not that dickish -- I am curious what those "christened as OK" Sloggers would say?

I'll be in and out on Monday; you'll probably see me here and there. I'm looking forward to it.

Kim, thanks for the kind words. Aislinn, you haven't been around here long enough to remember the real "good old days." And yeah, it wasn't all sunshine and light back then, either. Though it was certainly a lot better than it is now.

I've opposed registration all along. Don't ask me why; I always post under the same name anyway. Maybe it's just the libertarian in me. But if that's what it takes to reduce the current level of miscreants on the site to a tolerable level, count me in.

Why not just have this come up when people click "Post Comments":

"Thank you for your interest in Slog. Slog is a convivial internet community of like-minded users. As such, we have taken some steps to make commenting easy, fun, and friendly. Slog requires commenter registration by application, to include an essay on "Why I want to be a Slog commenter", examples of comments on other blogs or web sites, and a valid form of identification. Approval of application will take place only after an in-person or telephone interview. User names consist only of real names and are accompanied by a recent photo. Handles are not allowed. All comments are moderated and posted only after being reviewed by a Stranger staff member. A maximum of one comment per post per commenter is allowed, and a maximum of ten comments per commenter per day. Comments must be addressed directly to the Slog poster and must pertain only to that post. Dialogue between commenters is not allowed. Absolutely no foul language is allowed. Violators receive one warning and are then permanently banned. We look forward to your application, and to having you join us on the new, improved, friendlier Slog."

he admittedly strokes his own ego while reviewing other peoples creative works.
