Posted by Jonathan Golob on Sun, Feb 15, 2009 at 5:36 PM

PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE JACKSON KY
1145 PM EST FRI FEB 13 2009

...POSSIBLE SATELLITE DEBRIS FALLING ACROSS THE REGION...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN JACKSON HAS RECEIVED CALLS THIS EVENING FROM THE PUBLIC CONCERNING POSSIBLE EXPLOSIONS AND...OR EARTHQUAKES ACROSS THE AREA. THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION HAS REPORTED TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT THAT THESE EVENTS ARE BEING CAUSED BY FALLING SATELLITE DEBRIS. THESE PIECES OF DEBRIS HAVE BEEN CAUSING SONIC BOOMS...RESULTING IN THE VIBRATIONS BEING FELT BY SOME RESIDENTS...AS WELL AS FLASHES OF LIGHT ACROSS THE SKY. THE CLOUD OF DEBRIS IS LIKELY THE RESULT OF THE RECENT IN ORBIT COLLISION OF TWO SATELLITES ON TUESDAY...FEBRUARY 10TH WHEN KOSMOS 2251 CRASHED INTO IRIDIUM 33.

Why? Because.

It must mean that Jebus is angry that that colored man got in the White House!

(We are, after all, talking about Dixie)

I live in Kentucky, and one of my friends driving to see me on Friday night told me he saw a shooting star land not 400 yards from the highway. I'd wondered if it might be satellite debris.

We're not starting the annual Blue Angels argument already, are we? I don't have my pro-Blue Angels outfit picked out yet!

I guess it's off to Penney's for me....

FAA is wrong about the source - the reports have it moving too fast to be satellite debris. Plus the satellites were at too high of an altitude to have their debris reentering already.

I live in Kentucky as well, and yes, all the exiting stuff does happen here, with being without power for days at a time a few weeks ago, then again this past week....sooooo exciting.

@10's right - there have been a number of people commenting on this. The debris is way too fast to be satellite debris.

If it is satellite debris, better to have it burned up than to still be whizzing around up there creating a hazard. But if it's not debris from that collision, what is it? It would be very troubling to have something this big fall out of the sky and not know anything about where it came from.
