Something just screams "Barbituates". Not sure what particular variety.

Could also be a severe case of Tony Clifton's Disease.

tough call. Fidgety, nervous, not all there. Confused. My instinct tells me pot brownie.

I think he suffers from "CrispinGlover-ism" - no big deal, Dave's seen it before.

Let's see, clearly a downer, but there's an "up" component that's making him all twitchy, too. Speedball?

@6 Farrah Fawcett - Back in the dark ages, 10 or so years ago I think, FF made an infamous appearance on Letterman loaded out of her mind. It's probably on You-Tube.

I suspect that more than half the time you see something like this, it's a put-on. If I were an actor and had to go on these shows all the time, I'd act like a freak half the time just to watch the videos fly around the internet. Might as well entertain yourself.

It's doubly sad for someone who portrayed a drug addict so closely that he should be really averse to drugs...instead, he appears to be going down that same long road to nowhere.

Tragic to the Nth degree.

I Would guess perfromance art. You can see how he can't quite keep it up in the end. Then he takes off his glasses and gives Dave a genuine hanshake. A hip-hop Album?!? Funny as hell!

Casey Affleck is making a "documentary" about this whole hip hop album thing. It's a joke. Perez has been all over this since Joaquin first started showing up hairy.

If it was a hoax, it doesn't look like Letterman was in on it - dispite Dave's brilliant ad-libing and jokes about it.

This was old-school Letterman, not suffering fools gladly. He went for the jugular, and deservedly so.

no drugs, part of the act. you could see him break character, or force character a few times.

for instance, he clearly smiles at one point. another time, after people laugh at his choice in music, he has a strong reaction the audience's laughter, even though the laughter was rather subdued compared to their earlier outbursts. you could tell he was expecting the audience laughter, so he could respond.

this really really sad. i really fucking hate how they make a joke out of it. there is obviously something wrong. is everyone going to sit by and make jokes while he kills himself like his brother did?

the other thing i've heard is that it's a hoax. well if it is, it isnt' fucking funny and it makes me really dislike him.

@28. Actually, it was the so-called "Greatest Generation" that turned out to be the worst parents. They denied their massive PTSD problems, and drove their kids to hippiedom. The Boomers, for some reason, decided to throw off everything their parents had taught them and raise their kids the exact opposite. Got beaten by your war hero dad in an alcoholic rage? Well, then you better never so much as raise your voice at your own child, even if he burns the house down a second time. Nagged by your mother (who later turned out to be your grandma: older "sis" is your true mom)? Then only tell your kid they are the greatest ever and can never fail.

Do the kids dancing @ Woodstock look like they had loving parents? Depends on who you ask: the psychosis-masking parent or self-medicating offspring.

He's just goofing around; it's some kind of Andy Kaufman-esque thing he's doing for a film project. He has Casey Affleck following him around with a camera filming it all. People have caught him slipping out of the character at clubs.

He looks like he is suffering from a swollen head. His manner reeks of arrogance. He dissed his colleagues by refusing to go to Cannes for the premier of his movie, and is obviously sabotaging the publicity appearances he is contractually required to make.

Anyone see Saturday Night Live when The Thompson Twins were the musical guest? Tom Bailey was obviously wasted and couldn't carry a tune to save his life. Tragic appearance, and definitely not faked. I think his bandmates were pretty pissed about it.

Taking off the glasses and giving a hearty double-hand handshake and talking to Letterman animatedly as it fades to commercial seems like a dead giveaway that he's goofing. I have a feeling that the resultant "documentary" will kind of suck. Oh well.

"What do you have them on?" He's trying not to laugh at a few points. Yeah, it's a put on. Actually pretty funny. Reminds me of Monty Python sketches about bad interviews.

"Yeah..." (pause)(sigh)... (silence).

Making fun of the listener's expectation that he's about to say more.

What makes me think he was in some sort of character was that in the clip he was chewing gum, and then on stage he chews gum too, the same way.... I think he was faking it. But then he showed him his eyes right at the end. Puffy and red? Prolly.

Grade IV attentionwhoreitis in its most disgusting form.

Fake, fake, fake - I'm a fuckin' artist, man, why should I have to put up with this Letterman shit, yo? How dare you dumbass Letterman audience members laugh at my hip-hop music!

Ugh - this obnoxious ass needs to be permanently ignored.

This is a pretty good job he's doing here. I figure in a few months he's going to be pulling a Borat on the public. Unfortunately for Joaquin, Sascha Baron Cohen was relatively unknown in the US when he was filming, so he was left relatively unmolested. This has been pretty much debunked as a hoax though.

Casey Afleck, I think, is making a documentary about his transition from acting to music, and is basically following him around everywhere. Dave L. is a jokester - I think Joqauin was just f'in around with Dave's head - just like Dave always does to his guests. No harm, no foul. I thought it was funny. :)
