If you needed any more indication of the vision-less quality of what the Obama administration means by "change", consider not just that Obama's Cabinet has THREE Republicans, but that Gil Kerlikowske is going to be part of it. Seriously.

Kerlikowske had ties to the Clinton administration. Obama, after claiming we needed to break from the Clintons, brought them back into power because of their experience and expertise, supposedly.

Yet what has Kerlikowske done to merit being the nation's "drug czar"? His department's buy-bust policies have been shown to increase racial disparities in the city's enforcement of drug laws. His capitulation to police union pressure following a no-confidence vote showed no capacity to respond effectively to criticism. His failure to discipline officers found guilty of misconduct showed a pragmatism that frankly put expediency over ethics.

All of these problems are wrapped up in how the SPD, and police departments around the country, enforces the drug war. Kerlikowske showed zero awareness of the problems with the drug war, and became part of the problem, not part of the solution. He's better than someone a Republican president would appoint. But that is the only argument for his appointment to this position through patronage politics. Is this the best that Democrats can do?
