The Sting of Being Remaindered

Posted by on Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 2:32 PM

I was following the links on this great Wonkette story about a wingnut who says that in 1992, a drunk Soviet lady told him that covert Soviet agent Barack Obama would be America's first Communist president.

That’s right, a chocolate baby! And he’s going to be your president.”

She became more and more smug as she presented her stream of detailed knowledge and predictions so matter-of-factly — as though all were foregone conclusions. “It’s all been thought out. His father is not an American black, so he won’t have that social slave stigma. He is intelligent and he is half white and has been raised from the cradle to be an atheist and a Communist. He’s gone to the finest schools. He is being guided every step of the way and he will be irresistible to America.”

It's a really entertaining little post, and you should read it. But that's not why I'm posting this. I'm posting this because I followed the story back to World Net Daily and on their home page, they had the following ad:

That's right: Obama Nation, book by the guy who Swift-Boated John Kerry, has been marked down (by a "fantastic $23 discount") to just $4.95! It's so gratifying for me to see this book has been consigned to the hellish oblivion of deep remaindering.

WND sells all of their big books at that price, because it comes with a subscription, unless you decline it:

Important: For this very special $4.95 offer, you will receive a hardcover copy of "The Obama Nation" as well as three free issues of Whistleblower magazine. Also included with your free issues will be a renewal notice for a one-year Whistleblower subscription. If you wish to renew, do nothing, and your credit card which has been pre-authorized for $49.95 will be debited for the annual renewal rate of $49.95.

Why did he choose that image for the cover? Its odd that I can look at a this picture and think, "Well he looks calm and contemplative" somebody else sees the same picture and thinks "OMG! He's plotting to take over the world. Antichrist!".

This same offer is made on WND for the screeds of Little Annie O'Coulter of the Irish Channel. The catch is that to have this discount, you must purchase a subscription to World Net Daily and then you can purchase the wingnutbook for that teeny lil' $4.95 plus S&H. So alas I don't think that this is a remainder issue at all but one of the many nefarious ways that these authors continually find a place on the best-seller lists

It sounds like the wingnut has delusions of Angela Landsbury. What do you want to be that, after a pitcher of martinis, he gets out the soundtracks to "Mame" and "Gypsy" and has himself a wee old lip-syncing time?

Not that I have ever done anything like that of course.....

Ohh, wait - it was a lady talking to a lady? Well, it's still a bit too Angela Landsbury for my taste.... and I guess her being a woman and all wouldn't keep her from lip syncing.
