Martha Rosler's Indian PSAs

Posted by on Tue, Feb 10, 2009 at 10:11 AM

2bd8/1234243387-rosler_vitals_xl.jpgRosler, the feminist artist responsible for the video in which the measurements of a woman are taken and recorded (including vaginal depth) by men in white coats (right), came to Seattle in the 1990s for a Seattle Arts Commission project that resulted in several one-minute PSAs made from interviews with native tribal members including Vi Hilbert (who died not long ago) and Roger Fernandes. (I just found them on a random run-through of Rosler's work.)

It's too bad neither Seattle Art Museum nor the city dug those up during SAM's Salish exhibition this winter; I wonder where they were broadcast (in what contexts), whether they were considered any good, how we might consider them now, where they are now...

My God it stinks in here. It stinks of stupid women wondering about Tony. Wondering where he could be, who he is with, what he's thinking, whether he's thinking of you, and whether he'll ever return someday.

J.Lee- thank you for the funniest, most unexpected Kids reference.

The Rosler videos were one of the highlights of WACK! for me--it's a good question--where are those PSA videos? Can we assume the Seattle Art Commission still owns the rights?

Thanks also for another happy reminder of WACK! (a WACK! flashback (WACKback?) if you will...)
